Molecular Detection of Leishmania spp. in Skin and Blood of Stray Dogs from Endemic Areas of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Saudi Arabia

Abstract: Background: Dogs can act as reservoirs of canine leishmaniasis, caused by Leishmania species. The aims of this study were to determine the prevalence of canine leishmaniasis using a PCR technique among stray dogs living in three provinces of Saudi Arabia, Riyadh, Al-Ahsa Oasis and Al-Qaseem, where the disease is endemic; and to identify and document different Leishmania to species levels Methods: This cross-sectional investigation was conducted, from Mar 2016 to Apr 2018, in three parts of Saudi Arabia: … Show more

“…This finding matches the protective properties of yeast glucans that had previously been described in murine leishmaniosis models [ 118 , 119 ]. The utility of this approach for leishmaniosis treatment in other species, such as the domestic and feral dogs [ 120 ], cats [ 121 ], and foxes [ 122 ] remains to be investigated.…”

“…Moreover, in that country CL by Leishmania major has the highest prevalence mainly in Riyadh, Qassim, Al-Madinah, Al-Hassa, Hail and Asir [5][6][7] with an estimated number of more than 26,300 cases [2] over the past 10 years (2006-2016). In addition, in Saudi Arabia there are several reports of leishmaniasis by Leishmania infantum Leishmania major and Leishmania tropica among humans and wild animals [8][9][10][11][12].…”
