Molecular Detection of Influenza A and B Viruses in Four Consecutive Influenza Seasons 2015–16 to 2018–19 in a Tertiary Center in Western Saudi Arabia

Abstract: Influenza viruses are recognized globally as persistent threats to human health. They are the primary respiratory pathogens that cause annual epidemics with high economic loss and approximately 250,000-500,000 deaths annually worldwide [1,2]. Influenza viruses are characterized by two mechanisms that direct the evolution of new variants; antigenic drift and genetic shift [3,4]. Genetic shift is a sudden, substantial change in the influenza A virus and related to the unexpected emergence of new subtypes, and oc… Show more

“…October was the peak month of infections, and no co-infection with subtypes was reported. 18 However, in our study, the reverse was true in which 33.7% were influenza A positive, 24.1% were influenza B positive, and 17% were infected with both types. It can be concluded that around one-third of the population had influenza.…”

“…Te majority of patients in our study (68.9%) received oseltamivir on admission. Tis is commonly practiced in the empirical treatment of CAP [12], especially since most of our patients were admitted in the winter time, the peak time for infuenza infection in Saudi Arabia [26]. Additionally, 58 out of 106 (54.7%) patients in the current study received systemic corticosteroids.…”
