Molecular design of metal-free D–π-A substituted sensitizers for dye-sensitized solar cells

Abstract: Novel donor-p-acceptor (D-p-A) dyes, coded as SD-1, SD-2 and SD-5, were designed and synthesized for dye-sensitized solar cells. All these dyes comprised the same donor and acceptor units while the oligo thiophene units were introduced as linkers between the donor and acceptor units. The photophysical and electrochemical properties of the dyes were investigated by UV/vis spectrometry and cyclic voltammetry. The dyes were subsequently tested as sensitizers in dye-sensitized solar cells. Photovoltaic performance… Show more

“…The synthesis of SD-1, SD-2, and SD-5 was reported elsewhere. 9 The dyes SD-3 and SD-4 were synthesized according to the steps depicted in Scheme 1. Every step of the reaction sequence proceeded smoothly and efficiently to give a good or moderate yield of the product.…”

“…9 It has been proposed that in addition to the red shift of the spectral response caused by inserting the thiophene units, their insertion favors the creation of charge recombination centers. Nanosecond flash photolysis studies of SD-1, SD-2, and SD-5, supported this contention, showing significant differences of the charge recombination rate constants with the insertion of thiophenes between the donor and acceptor.…”

“…The sintered TiO 2 electrodes were immersed for established time in the respective dye solutions, dried by blowing nitrogen, and then assembled with a thermal platinized FTO/glass counter electrode. The working and counter electrodes, separated by a 25 mm thick hot melt ring (Surlyn, DuPont), were sealed by heating; in the internal space Z960 electrolyte [27] was added with a vacuum pump and a Surlyn sheet covered with a thin glass has been used for sealing the hole. Schott K113 Tempax sunlight filter (Präzisions Glas & Optik GmbH, Germany) was used to match the spectral output of the lamp in the region of 350-750 nm so as to reduce the mismatch between the simulated and true solar spectra to less than 2%.…”
