Molecular connectivity and hydrophobicity in the study of antifeedant activity of clerodane diterpenoids

Abstract: Feeding deterrent activities of twelve clerodane diterpenoids towards Tenebrio molitor (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) larvae have been correlated using molecular connectivity indexes (3χc, 4χc, °ΔX) and hydrophobicity constants (log K′w) obtained by reverse‐phase liquid chromatography (RPLC). The equations obtained suggest that both the degree of branching and the electronic characteristics of the compounds under study have a dominant role in the observed antifeedant activity. The information obtained from the co… Show more

“…Taking into account the grain production of Argentina it is an interesting insect model to use in antifeedant activity studies toward clerodane diterpenes. In this order a considerable number of this kind of compounds (23-49) has been isolated in our laboratory from plants of the Asteraceae and Labiatae families Luco et al 1994;Gallardo Varas et al 1996;Ceñ al et al 1997;Enriz et al 2000;Simirgiotis et al 2000;Cifuente et al 2002;Gonzá lez Coloma et al 2005;Juan et al 2006). From this set of diterpenes, compounds 50-55 were prepared by chemical transformations.…”

“…The percentage feeding index (PFI) was calculated (cf. LUCO et al, 1994) where treated is the area treated with the solution of compound in 1 ml acetone and solvent control is the area treated with 1 ml acetone. The effect of triterpenoids on the duration of development was also studied using third instar S. litura larvae (GOVINDACHARI et al, 1996a).…”

“…In previous studies [15][16][17], hydrophobicity parameters obtained by RPLC as well as nonempirical descriptors based on the chemical graph theory, have been found useful in establishing quantitative structure-activity and structureproperty relationships (QSAR, QSPR).…”
