Molecular cloning of preproinsulin cDNAs from several osteoglossomorphs and a cyprinid

Abstract: Several preproinsulin cDNAs were isolated and characterized from four members of the Osteoglossomorpha (an ancient teleost group); Osteoglossum bicirrhosum (arawana), Pantodon buchholzi (butterfly fish), Notopterus chitala (feather fin knife fish), Hiodon alosoides (goldeye) and Gnathonemus petersii (elephantnose). In addition, we isolated and characterized the preproinsulin cDNA from Catostomus commersoni (white sucker, as a representative of a generalized teleost). The comparative analysis of the sequences r… Show more

“…Several studies have been published recently on the phylogeny of Osteoglossoidei suborder using morphological data [ 11 ], partial mitochondrial sequences [ 38 ], a few nuclear genes [ 39 ] or the combination of the latter two [ 40 ]. On the other hand, there is only a single study that analysed the phylogenetic relationship of the osteoglossids based on all genes present in the mitochondrial genomes [ 41 ] but the Asian arowana was not included as its complete mitogenomic sequence was not available.…”

“…(1998) supported a close relationship between an eel and an osteoglossomorph ( Pantodon ) – no mention is made of the other osteoglossomorphs included in their analysis or that the only relationship between Anguilla and Pantodon was based on symplesiomorphy. Al‐Mahrouki et al . 's (2001) analysis of the sequences of preproinsulin cDNAs from five osteoglossomorphs ( Osteoglossum , Pantodon , Hiodon , Chitala and Gnathonemus ), however, seems more straightforward, although no discussion beyond ‘maximum parsimony’ was made of their methods of phylogenetic analysis.…”

“…This group of fishes has also attracted the attention of molecular biologists. Consequently, molecular systematic studies of the group have increased rapidly (Kumazawa & Nishida, 2000;Lavoué et al, 2000;Al-Mahrouki et al, 2001;Lavoué & Sullivan, 2004).…”
