Molecular cloning, expression, and regulation of estrogen receptors in pigeon oviduct epithelial cells

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Estrogen regulates reproductive behavior and drives the proliferation and differentiation of several cell types. These physiological functions of estrogen are mediated by estrogen receptors (ERs), and each ER isoform plays a distinct role. To clarify the molecular mechanism of estrogen action and to evaluate the effect of ERs on the secretion of ovalbumin (OVA) in pigeon oviduct epithelial cells (POECs), we determined the complete coding sequences encoding ER alpha (ERα) and ER beta (ERβ) in pigeons.… Show more

“…Higher expression levels of both ESR genes in the tissues (hypothalamus, pituitary gland, gonad and liver) of male and female alligators that agreed with the results previously found in the killifish, cod, hagfish, four-striped rat snake, pigeon, European starling and rat (Kuiper et al, 1997;Bernard et al, 1999;Katsu et al, 2010;Nagasawa et al, 2014;Zhang et al, 2014;Cotter et al, 2015;Nishimiya et al, 2016). The ESRs mRNA levels in the lung, kidney and pancreas were low.…”

“…Egg white are reported to consist of ovalbumin and oval mucin, and are secreted and synthesized in the enlarged portion of the oviduct (also known as the proteinsecreting portion) (23). The synthesis and secretion of ovalbumin is regulated by estrogens (24). Among them, yolk protein is the main protein in egg yolk, and estrogen induces the synthesis of yolk protein (25).…”

“…Steroid hormones, such as estrogen, androgen and progestin, have been studied in pigeons, regulated vitellogenesis, incubation, and oviduct development [ 38 41 ]. The enzymes involved in steroid biosynthesis pathway are being recognized as important target for endocrine-disrupting, which would impair reproduction [ 42 ], the 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3-β HSD) and aromatase cytochrome P450 enzymes which are essential for the biosynthesis of all classes of steroid hormones, were detected in this transcriptome.…”
