Molecular cloning and characterization of a gene encoding RING zinc finger ankyrin protein from drought-tolerant Artemisia desertorum

Abstract: A RING zinc finger ankyrin protein gene, designated AdZFP1, was isolated from drought-tolerant Artemisia desertorum Spreng by mRNA differential display and RACE. Its cDNA was 1723 bp and encoded a putative protein of 445 amino acids with a predicted molecular mass of 47.9 kDa and an isoelectric point (pI) of 7.49. A typical C3HC4- type RING finger domain was found at the C-terminal region of the AdZFP1 protein, and several groups of ankyrin repeats were found at the N-terminal region. Alignments of amino acid se… Show more

“…A RING zinc finger ankyrin protein gene from Artemisia desertorum, designated AdZFP1, is strongly induced under various environmental stresses such as drought, salt, cold, heat and abscisic acid (ABA) treatment (Yang et al 2008; Table 2). Overexpression of AdZFP1 in tobacco is known to enhance drought tolerance (Yang et al 2008; Table 2).…”

“…Arabidopsis XBAT and XBAT-related genes from other plant species are involved in development, re-production, ABA signaling, and biotic and abiotic stress tolerance (Nodzon et al, 2004;Huang et al, 2006;Stone et al, 2006;Wang et al, 2006;Xu et al, 2007;Yang et al, 2008). Loss of Arabidopsis XBAT32, for example, results in a delayed growth phenotype and reduced lateral root production due to a decrease in lateral root initiation (Nodzon et al, 2004).…”

“…S1). Given the previous association detected between the XBAT-related genes and ABA signaling (Stone et al, 2006;Yang et al, 2008), xbat32, xbat34, and xbat35 seedlings were treated with ABA and its inhibitory effect on root growth was analyzed. Three-day-old seedlings were transferred to growth medium (GM) with or without ABA, and root development was analyzed after 5 d. Interestingly, from this analysis, we discovered that ABA promoted rather than inhibited xbat32 lateral root production ( Fig.…”

“…Of the RING ankyrin repeat proteins studied so far XBAT32 is the only member found to be involved in ethylene synthesis/ signaling. Other XBAT or XBAT-related proteins are involved in disease resistance, drought tolerance, flower senescence and fertilization [14][15][16][17] (Fig. 1).…”
