Molecular Cloning and Characterization of a Wild Eggplant Solanum aculeatissimum NBS-LRR Gene, Involved in Plant Resistance to Meloidogyne incognita

Abstract: Root-knot nematodes, Meloidogyne spp., cause considerable damage in eggplant production. Transferring of resistance genes from wild relatives would be valuable for the continued improvement of eggplant. Solanum aculeatissimum, a wild relative of eggplant possessing resistance to Meloidogyne incognita, is potentially useful for genetically enhancing eggplant. In the present study, we have isolated and characterized a nucleotide-binding site leucine-rich repeat (NBS-LRR) resistance gene, designated as SacMi. The… Show more

“…Our results indicated that ZmNBS25 was expressed at relatively low levels in uninfected maize leaves; however, it was significantly upregulated at 24 h post B. maydis inoculation, indicating that ZmNBS25 might be associated with B. maydis resistance in maize. Similar expression patterns have been observed in other plants NBS-LRR genes, such as: AhRRS5 , a R. solanacearum resistance gene in peanut ( Zhang et al, 2017 ); Xa1 , a bacterial resistance gene from rice ( Yoshimura et al, 1998 ); and SacMi , a M. incognita resistance gene ( Zhou et al, 2018 ). In addition, the expression level of ZmNBS25 was significantly upregulated by SA treatment.…”

“…Eggplant is sensitive to cold stress and often undergoes the cold stress during its growth and development, especially in the early spring (Zhou et al, 2018a;Zhou et al, 2018b). Therefore, it is important to explore the mechanism for cold tolerance and how to improve this tolerance.…”

“…VIGS was an effective tool to study the gene functions (Zhang et al, 2018;Xu et al, 2019). VIGS mediated by TRV has been successfully employed in the functional analysis of eggplant genes (Zhou et al, 2018a;Zhou et al, 2018b). We conducted a functional validation for SmWRKY26 and SmWRKY32 using VIGS.…”

“…For example, a study identified a resistance gene—a nucleotide-binding site leucine-rich repeat (NBS-LRR)—against the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne spp. from the wild relative of eggplant, Solanum aculeatissimum [14], and discussed the biotechnological potential of transferring the gene to cultivated eggplants to create more resistant introgression lines. Several other examples exist in the literature.…”
