Molecular Cloning and Characterization of an Ortholog of NPR1 Gene from Dongguan Dajiao (Musa spp. ABB)

Abstract: The nonexpresser of pathogenesis-related gene 1 (NPR1) plays a pivotal role in systemic acquired resistance in plants. In this study, a novel full-length NPR1-like gene, designated MdNPR1 (accession number FJ357442), was isolated by RACE-PCR from cv. Dongguan Dajiao (Musa spp. ABB), a local banana cultivar known to be resistant to Fusarium oxysporum fsp. cubense (FOC) race 4. Sequence alignment showed that MdNPR1 contained an ankyrin repeat domain and a broad complex, tramtrack, and brica-brac (BTB) domain. Se… Show more

“…However, diseases, such as bacterial blight, have caused severe reductions in rice yield (Zhao et al 2010). To improve resistance and raise the yield, great efforts have been made to clone resistance genes in rice and other plants (Feng et al 2009;Zhao et al 2009;Leng et al 2010). Many resistance genes have been cloned and now contribute to improve disease resistance; one example is gene Xa21, which confers resistance to almost all Indian and Philippine races of Xanthomonas oryzae pv.…”

“…Indeed this is what was exactly observed in this study where MdNPR1 expression pattern was consistent with PR3 expression pattern. MdNPR1 expression has already been shown to be induced by an array of elicitors including SA and FOC treatment in some banana cultivars [18]. Since NPR1 is normally induced in response to different abiotic and biotic stress factors, it would also be expected to be induced by Xvm.…”
