Molecular Characterization of Testicular Mesothelioma and the Role of Asbestos as a Causative Factor

Abstract: Context.— Mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis testis (TVT) is an extremely rare form of mesothelioma. Objective.— To compare the clinical and molecular characteristics of mesothelioma of the TVT with those of mesothelioma at other more common sites, including the relationship with exposure to asbestos. Design.— We present clinical and pathological data for 9… Show more

“…In line with the ever-expanding literature of clinically relevant molecular changes, the section on ancillary data and recommendation has been expanded, and will probably require expansion into the future. [91][92][93][94][95][96] Possibly most significantly, in-situ mesothelioma is now an accepted diagnostic category and is timely; as more data are collected on the clinical significance of this diagnosis, this will inform any updates of future UICC/AJCC staging manuals and, eventually, clinical trials.…”

“…The fracture and size (length and diameter) of the asbestos fibers [18] represent the most crucial parameters of their toxicity [19]. These features make these minerals highly carcinogenic and responsible for uncommon, dangerous diseases, including asbestosis, tumors in the lung [20,21], larynx and ovaries, mesothelioma, a rare malignancy of the serosal membranes [15], and serous covering of the testis [22]. Mesothelioma is commonly associated with prior extensive inhalation of crocidolite [23], tremolite, and amosite fibers, but other fibrous minerals (such as erionite, fluoro-edenite, and balangeroite) [24] can also be responsible for this disease.…”

“…Nye data tyder på, at MTVT ligner de pleurale og peritoneale mesoteliomer vedrørende morfologiske undertyper og genomiske forandringer [4]. I Danmark foregår den onkologiske del af behandlingen på Rigshospitalet, hvor en opgørelse i 2023 fandt i alt otte patienter i løbet af de seneste ti år [5].…”
