Molecular Characterization of Stress Tolerant Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) for Growth Enhancement of Rice

Abstract: The study was undertaken to characterize plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) for growth enhancement and stress tolerant traits and their efficacy on early establishment of rice seedling. In vitro growth promoting traits revealed that out of 30 PGPR isolates, 18 fixed nitrogen, 17 solubilized tri-calcium phosphate, 29 and 17 produced IAA with or without addition of L-tryptophane. In case of stress tolerant activities, PGPR isolates tolerated pH ranging from 5 to 10, Nacl from 1 to 6% and polyethylene gl… Show more

“…For L. salicaria, low saline stress (i.e., EC of 5 dS m −1 ) can stimulate the growth in height of its seedlings. With the addition of alkaline salt, the damaging effect of saline-alkaline stress was generally more severe than that of saline stress at the same EC due to high pH, which was consistent with previous study [36]. CCI was inhibited by saline-alkaline stress in most tested plant species in this study.…”

“…CS2 inoculation improved quantity of carotenoid, chl 'a', and chl 'b' contents ( Table 2). The increased biomass production in inoculated plants may be credited to increased synthesis of carotenoids along with chl 'a' and chl 'b' [37][38]. Similarly, improved chl contents, growth, and biomass production was observed in inoculated Eruca sativa plants growing under Cd stress [39].…”

“…All PGPR isolates were initially isolated from crop fields of the Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Serdang, Selangor, and Semerak, Pasir Puteh, Kelantan, Malaysia, by using the dilution plate technique. All selected PGPR isolates possessed nitrogen fixation, phosphate solubilization, indoleacetic acid (IAA) synthesis, and salt tolerant properties [ 30 ].…”
