Molecular Characterization of Peruvian Fowl Adenovirus (FAdV) Isolates

Abstract: Forty seven clinical samples of Fowl adenovirus (FAdV) associated with Inclusion Body Hepatitis (IBH) from Peruvian broilers received between July 2006 and April 2013 were genotyped using sequencing of L1 Loop of Hexon gene. All 47 clinical samples presented macroscopic and histopathology lesions consistent with IBH, and amplified a specific fragment of Hexon gene by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). A unique nucleotide sequence of 789 base pairs of Hexon gene (position 273 to 1061) was obtained in all 47 clini… Show more

“…Avian adenovirus has been reported in many countries and is a virus associated with diseases such as inclusion body hepatitis (IBH), hydropericardium syndrome (HS), and respiratory and enteric conditions [2,4,6,14,20,24]. FAdV-I has also been described in South American countries like Ecuador, Chile and Peru [16,26,31], including Brazil [22]. In this study, FAdV-I was detected in its target tissues where replication occurs [7,29], based on PCR amplification of the 897 bp fragment of the hexon gene [19].…”

“…Serological detections have been reported in Cuba, Guyana and Trinidad & Tobago and molecular detection of the virus has been reported in the Dominica Republic (Brown Jordan, Gongora, Hartley, & Oura, 2018;Brown Jordan, Sookhoo, et al, 2018;Schachner, Marek, Grafl, & Hess, 2016). There have however been a number of reports of FAdV being present and causing disease in poultry from the nearby territories of Latin America, including the presence of FAdV-4 (Hafez, 2011;Liu et al, 2016;Mazaheri et al, 1998;Pereira et al, 2014;Rodríguez, Koga, Alvarado, & Tinoco, 2014;Toro et al, 1999). A recent publication on the molecular characterization of disease causing FAdV strains from Brazil revealed the presence of FAdV-8a, FAdV-8b and FAdV-11 (De la Torre, Nunez, Parra, Astolfi-Ferreira, & Ferreira, 2018).…”

“…In a report from Peru of C-4 isolates from outbreaks of adenoviral hepatitis consistent with IBH in broilers, hydropericardium was absent. 11 The 789-bp sequences analyzed in Peru are considerably different from the C-4 sequenced from our cases, and further comparisons cannot be made. Nevertheless, the serotype identified in the backyard chickens described here is identical to the strains identified in HHS outbreaks in China, and we cannot account for this discrepancy.…”
