Molecular Characterization Of Pathogenic Salmonella Spp From Raw Beef In Karachi, Pakistan

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to estimate the prevalence of Salmonella and investigate the dominant serovars distribution in raw beef and to screen the isolated serovars for the prescense of beta-lactamases and virulence genes. A total of 150 samples of raw beef sold at butcher shops (n = 75) and supermarkets (n = 75) in Karachi city were collected (50 samples each from muscles, lymph nodes, and minced beef). The samples were cultured according to the ISO-6579-1guidlines. The overall prevalence of Salmonell… Show more

“…All contaminated Salmonella isolates belonged to serovar Enteritidis, of which group C was predominant. When compared with the prevalence of S. Enteritidis from raw foods in other countries, e.g., abattoirs in Iran and butcher shops and supermarkets in Pakistan where the prevalence rates were 43 and 37.5%, respectively, the bacterial prevalence in our study was less [37,38].…”

“…Salmonella was most often observed in food categories of meat origin. Meat can become contaminated with Salmonella throughout the entire production chain due to poor hygienic conditions and practices adopted by workers at various stages of processing ( Hussain et al, 2020 ). Comparing the results of the present work with the available data provided by the European food safety authority and the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control [ EFSA and ECDC (European Food Safety Authority and European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control), 2021 = 2.30%], the prevalence of meat-positive samples recorded here (13.41%) was higher than the European average.…”

“…isolates to penicillins, tetracyclines, and cephalosporins have been reported by other authors. Altaf Hussain et al [ 20 ] found that Salmonella isolates from retail raw beef in Karachi city, Pakistan were highly resistant to ampicillin (90.5%), amoxicillin (81.1%), and tetracycline (76%). Fortuna et al [ 69 ] found that the Salmonella spp.…”
