Molecular characterization of freshwater snails in the genus Bulinus: a role for barcodes?

Abstract: Background: Reliable and consistent methods are required for the identification and classification of freshwater snails belonging to the genus Bulinus (Gastropoda, Planorbidae) which act as intermediate hosts for schistosomes of both medical and veterinary importance. The current project worked towards two main objectives, the development of a cost effective, simple screening method for the routine identification of Bulinus isolates and the use of resultant sequencing data to produce a model of relationships w… Show more

“…Accurate identification of such intermediate snail hosts is a prerequisite for understanding disease epidemiology and aids in focusing control, especially if resources are limited and parasites have a wide host range (Kane et al, 2008;Rollinson et al, 2009). Historically, species of Radix have been identified using shell morphology, reproductive system anatomy and colouration and these parameters continue to be used to describe new species (Glöer and Pešic, 2008).…”

“…Molecular-based taxonomy of disease vectors often contradicts traditional views and can result in extensive taxonomic revisions. For example several medically important snail species within the genus Bulinus were originally named and identified based on morphological characteristics, such as shell structure and internal anatomy, but have since been separated into distinct species based on molecular evidence (Kane et al, 2008). In fact, molecular approaches have aided in the elucidation of cryptic species and species complexes that appear morphologically identical (Pfenninger et al, 2006).…”

“…The current study described the medically important snails detected for the first time in Miangran Lake as follows: Lymnaeidae snails with a diverse distribution and parasitological importance because they are intermediate hosts of some trematodes that infect human e g. Fasciola spp. (5,15), genus Bulinus which act as intermediate hosts for Schistosomes that are responsible for a highly significant group of infections in humans termed schistosomiasis (14). Genus Bithynia that is important because some species are intermediate hosts of liver and intestinal trematodes; for example, the liver fluke Opisthorchis viverrini (13), and Genus Melanoides that is considered to be of medical significance.…”
