Molecular characterization of class 1 integrons in MDRPseudomonas aeruginosaisolated from clinical settings in Iran, Tehran

Abstract: Seven hundred and fifty nonreplicated clinical isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa were collected from five hospitals during March 2007 to May 2009. Forty-one isolates (5.46%) were characterized as multidrug-resistant P. aeruginosa (MDRPA). PCR assays were used to detect class 1 integrons. Amplifications of internal variable regions (IVRs) of class 1 integrons revealed three different arrays (0.8, 1.3, and 1.7 kb) with different distributions in clinical isolates. The amplified IVRs were sequenced and three gen… Show more

“…In particularly, the cassette aadA6-orfD was found in 89 % of the isolates. This array seems to be widespread in other countries (Garza-Ramos et al, 2010;Shahcheraghi et al, 2010;Borgianni et al, 2011). Unlike aadA6-orfD and aacC3-cmlA5, the cassette aacA4-catB8-aadA1 detected in one of the isolates is usually reported in Acinetobacter baumannii (Turton et al, 2005), although this gene has been observed previously in P. aeruginosa (Jeong et al, 2009).…”

“…Our present study showed high expression of resistance genes to aminoglycosides among Salmonella isolates. These results match those from other reports that revealed that cassettes for aminoglycosides are common in class I integrons (Huang et al ., ; Kang et al ., ; Shahcheraghi et al ., ). The most prevalent arrays in our S. Enteritidis were aadA6 ‐ orfD .…”

“…However, a previous study from one medical centre in Taiwan indicated that the prevalence of MDR-PA infections increased significantly from 1.74% in 2001 to 6.31% in 2004 [20]. The reported prevalence of MDR-PA varies amongst Asian countries, from 1.62% in Japan to 4.49% in India and 5.46% in Iran [21][22][23]. The rate is similar (4.7%) in Europe but is much higher (10%) in the USA [24,25].…”
