Molecular Characterization and Viral Origin of the First Dengue Outbreak in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan Province, China, 2013

Abstract: In August 2013, Xishuangbanna, Yunnan Province, China, had its first dengue outbreak. Dengue virus (DENV) RNA detection in sera or viral isolates revealed that all 222 autochthonous patients detected and three Chinese travelers from Laos (imported cases) were positive for DENV-3 serotype, while DENV-1 and DENV-4 were detected in travelers from Myanmar and Thailand during the outbreak. For 33 suspected dengue cases collected before the outbreak, two imported cases from Laos and nine residents living in Laos (La… Show more

“…3). The Laotian DENV-3 genotype II isolates were most closely related to those isolated from China (2013), Myanmar (2009), Bangladesh (2008), the Philippines (2010), Thailand (2010), Cambodia (2008), and Vietnam (2010) [25, 27]. All of the Laotian DENV-3 genotype II viruses obtained in this study and sequences from other Southeast Asian countries formed a monophyletic relationship with very high values bootstrap support (>98 %).…”

“…Since the first outbreak of DF in Yunnan in 2008 [22], the number of DENV cases has been increasing in Xishuangbanna. There were 1319 cases confirmed DENV-3 in 2013, 1132 cases confirmed DENV-2 in 2015 and 1384 cases confirmed DENV-1 in 2017 [25,[29][30][31]. Therefore, it is important to continuously monitor the DF epidemic in Xishuangbanna.…”

“…Xishuangbanna is located in southwestern Yunnan Province, which is a border area of China, Burma and Laos. In 2013 and 2015, DENV-3 and DENV-2 outbreaks were reported in Xishuangbanna with 1319 and 1132 infections, respectively (Guo et al, 2015;Wang et al, 2016;Ren et al, 2015). In 2017, the first DENV-1 outbreak in the history of Xishuangbanna occurred.…”
