The intensification of Asian Seabass aquaculture has led to the emergence of viral diseases such as viral nervous necrosis (VNN), which cause massive mortalities and enormous economic losses in the region. Currently, there are no effective prophylactic or therapeutic measures against the etiological agent of the disease-the nervous necrosis virus (NNV). Though the innate immune response against viruses in teleosts is mainly mediated by type I interferons, no interferons have yet been identified in Lates calcarifer. We report the cloning and characterization of two 2-cysteine-containing type I IFNs from Lates. Based on phylogenetic analysis and protein sequence, these belong to subgroups d and h of type I IFNs with two cysteines. We found constitutive expression of these LcIFN mRNAs in the brain, blood, fin, gill, heart, intestine, head kidney, spleen and muscle. The expression was significantly induced upon poly(I:C) injection in the head kidney, heart and gill. Significant upregulation of LcIFN expression was also observed in Lates head kidney, spleen and heart following in vivo infection with RGNNV. These two Lates IFNs appear to be important antiviral molecules in the host innate immune response against betanodavirus and other emerging viruses threatening Lates aquaculture.

The growth, immune response, and reproductive performance of broodstock of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) under winter stress conditions were investigated the effects of supplementary diets with astaxanthin-enriched bacterium, Paracoccus carotinifaciens. Throughout an eight-week period in the winter season, male and female tilapia were fed with diets containing different levels of P. carotinifaciens dietary supplementation: 0 g/kg (T1; control), 5 g/kg (T2), 10 g/kg (T3), and 20 g/kg (T4). Subsequently, a four-week mating system was implemented during the winter stress period. The results revealed that there were no signi cant differences observed in growth, hematological indices, and blood chemical pro les among all treatment groups for both male and female tilapia. However, a signi cant increase in cholesterol content was noted in both male and female tilapia fed with the T4 diet (p<0.05). The total carotenoid content in the muscle was evaluated, and signi cantly higher values were found in both male and female tilapia that fed T4 supplementation (p<0.05). Moreover, immunological parameters such as myeloperoxidase and antioxidant parameters in the liver including superoxide dismutase activity and catalase enzyme activity showed signi cant increases in tilapia fed with the T4 diet. The impact of P. carotinifacienssupplementation on broodstock tilapia indicated a signi cant increase in spermatozoa concentration in males and increased egg production in females after consumption of the T4 diet (p<0.05). Thus, this study highlighted that the presence of astaxanthin-enriched bacterium P. carotinifaciensin the diet of broodstock Nile tilapia can lead to the accumulation of carotenoids in their muscle tissue, improvement in antioxidant status, enhancement of immune function, and potential enhancement of reproductive capabilities, even under overwintering conditions.

Vitamin C comprises a group of related water-soluble substances that are crucial to the physiology and health of aquatic animals. Most aquatic animals have a limited capacity to synthesize Vitamin C, thus obtaining Vitamin C predominantly from diets. Because of its ability to scavenge free radicals, act as an antioxidant, and reduce inflammation, vitamin C has become increasingly popular as an ingredient for aquatic feed in recent years. However, the amount of vitamin C that various aquatic organisms require differs substantially from one another. This updated review presents a general outline of the possible physiological function of vitamin C for farmed aquatic animals, with an emphasis on the information on growth, antioxidant status, immunity, disease prevention, and reproductive performance, as well as the synergistic effects of vitamin C with other micronutrients such as vitamin E, glucans, and metal elements during the past few years. In addition, the interaction between the gut microbiota of aquatic animals and the dietary vitamin C that they consume is something that has been looked into. When it comes to expanding the use of vitamin C in the aquaculture industry, having a solid understanding of the positive functions and mechanisms that vitamin C possesses is of the utmost significance.
