Molecular characterisation of nerol dehydrogenase gene (PmNeDH) from Persicaria minor in response to stress-related phytohormones

Abstract: Citral is a mixture of neral and geranial, which are of great interest to the fragrance industry due to its lemon-scented aroma. A newly characterized nerol dehydrogenase of Persicaria minor (PmNeDH) from our recent findings has shown a capacity to convert citral from nerol. Differential gene expression analysis revealed that the expression level of PmNeDH was highly upregulated during early treatment of several stress-related phytohormones i.e. methyl jasmonate (MeJA), salicylic acid (SA) and abscisic acid (A… Show more

“…minus and Pe. minor , respectively which are classified as monoterpene alcohol dehydrogenases showed specificity towards NADP + as their coenzyme (Hassan et al, 2012; Tan et al, 2019). Other terpene alcohol dehydrogenases isolated from plants, such as N. tabacum allylic alcohol dehydrogenase (Hirata et al, 2000), Salvia officinalis borneol dehydrogenase (Croteau et al, 1978) and Mentha piperita isopiperitenol dehydrogenase (Kjonaas et al, 1985) showed preference to both NADP + or NAD + .…”

“…Several alcohol dehydrogenases from plants such as nerol dehydrogenase from Po. minus (Tan et al, 2019), cultured rice cells alcohol dehydrogenase (Igaue & Yagi, 1982), Triticum turgidum (wheat) alcohol dehydrogenases (Langston et al, 1980) and Vitis vinifera (grape) alcohol dehydrogenases (Tesnière & Verriès, 2000) existed as homodimers. A plant based acyclic monoterpene primary alcohol dehydrogenase from Rauwolfia serpentina (Ikeda et al, 1991) appeared as a monomer in solution.…”

“…One the other hand, potential GES of citronellol may decide on the citronellol accumulation on to a greater extent by inducing citronellol synthesis. Whereas, the studies of dehydrogenases of geraniol or nerol are greatly about geraniol acid and haven’t identified the one for citronellol transformation until now ( Hassan et al, 2012 ; Tan et al, 2019a ; Tan et al, 2019b ), much less to the indistinguishable identification of geraniol or citronellol GES which is hidden in ambiguous function of terpenoid synthase family ( Magnard et al, 2015 ). We prefer that the high citronellol accumulation more result from the induced response of an assumed GES.…”
