Molecular Basis of Pathogenesis of Coronaviruses: A Comparative Genomics Approach to Planetary Health to Prevent Zoonotic Outbreaks in the 21st Century

Abstract: In the first quarter of the 21st century, we are already facing the third emergence of a coronavirus outbreak, the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) responsible for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Comparative genomics can inform a deeper understanding of the pathogenesis of COVID-19. Previous strains of coronavirus, SARS-CoV, and Middle-East respiratory syndrome-coronavirus (MERS-CoV), have been known to cause acute lung injuries in humans. SARS-CoV-2 shares genetic… Show more

“…A novel coronavirus emerged at the end of 2019, the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has since consumed the planet, with the cruel development of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in some [ 1 , 2 ]. This virus has resulted in one of the deadliest human pandemics in modern history [ 3 ]. As of the 26th of February 2021, 112,649,371 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 2,501,229 confirmed deaths had been recorded worldwide [ 4 ].…”

“…α- and β-affect mammals while γ-CoVs infect avian species and δ-CoVs mammals as well as aves. In the past, six CoVs species had the potential to cause human diseases however, in immune-competent individuals, four of these six can only cause common cold [ 4 , 5 ]. The other two species were severe acute respiratory syndrome CoV (SARS-CoV) and Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV).…”

“…Additionally, SARS-CoV-2 is also initiated by zoonotic transmission as were SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV. SARS-CoV-2 is very fatal as it is transferred among humans through sneezing and making contacts [ 5 ].…”
