Molecular association of cryptand 221D in NaCl-water solutions. A small-angle neutron scattering study

Abstract: Molecules of 5-D e c y l-4 , 7 , 1 3 , 1 6 , 2 1-p e n t a o x a-1 , l O-d i~i c o s a n (221D) and its sodium complex, with both a hydrophobic and a hydrophilic portion, are expected to form aggregates in water solutions. This was confirmed by surface tension measurements. The aggregation behaviour was studied by small-angle neutron scattering at two different [NaC11/[221D] molar ratios, such as to obtain, in one case, aggregates entirely made up of ionic monomers, and in the other, mixed micelles constituted… Show more

“…However, the results indicate that the micelle sizes depend on the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl chains, and that the growth rate with the concentration is higher for longer compounds. The size growths with the concentration for compounds 4b – d are similar to those observed for aqueous solutions of a large variety of monomeric surfactants [ 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 ].…”

“…A HG . The aggregation number trend is similar to that observed, as a consequence of an electrolyte addition, in 5-decyl-4,7,13,16,21pentaoxa-1,10-diazabicyclo-[8.8.5]tricosane (Caponetti et al, 1993 and2003) and decyl-18-crown-6 (Turro et al, 1986) but lower than that observed in (dodecyloxy)methyl-18-crown-6 (Ozeki et al, 1990). All cited surfactants consist of a single macrocycle linked to the hydrocarbon moiety.…”

“…The SANS technique is useful for determining structural parameters of the systems under analysis; in this paper we have used the SANS technique with the purpose of deriving the mixed micelles composition. Previously, the SANS technique had been applied to suggest that, in an aqueous solution containing ammonium decanoate and ammonium perfluorooctanoate, mixed micelles are formed.…”
