Molecular architecture via coordination: quasi-octahedral macrocycles of rhodium and iridium bearing a pentamethylcyclopentadienyl group

Abstract: Reactions of [Cp*MCl 2 ] 2 (M = Rh, Ir) with bidentate ligand (L = pyrazine; LA = diisocyanide) gave [Cp*MCl 2 (L or LA}] 2 , which were converted into tetranuclear complexes [Cp* 2 M 2 Cl 2 (L)(LA)] 2 (OTf) 4 containing different ligands on treatment with Ag(OTf).

“…Alternately, reactions of [Cp*MCl 2 ] 2 (M = Rh, Ir) with bidentate ligand (L = pyrazine; L’ = diisocyanide) gave the bimetallic edge [Cp*MCl 2 (L or L’)] 2 , which upon treatment with silver trifluoromethanesulfonate (AgOTf) led to tetranuclear cationic metallarectangular complexes [Cp* 2 M 2 Cl 2 (L)(L’)] 2 (OTf) 4 containing different ligands. 120 …”

“…n ϭ 2 in Scheme 2, because of their close resemblance to the tetranuclear chloro-bridged complexes of [{Cp*M(µ-Cl)} 4 L 2 ]X 4 (M ϭ Rh, Ir). [13,14] The present complexes are soluble in common organic solvents such as dichloromethane, acetonitrile, and methanol, suggesting that they are oligomers and not coordination polymers. “…[1Ϫ10] Recently it has been shown that supramolecular architectures can be constructed in a stepwise manner, using organometallic compounds. [11Ϫ16] Molecular squares and boxes have been synthesized by combining bidentate ligands, which have organometallic building blocks containing octahedral metals of Ru, [11,12] Rh [13,14] or Ir [15,16] , with arene, cyclopentadienyl or pentamethylcyclopentadienyl (Cp*) groups.…”

“…In previous work, we [6] and others [7] have designed and synthesized tetranuclear rhodium and iridium supramolecules bearing cyclopentadienyl derivatives and two different types of ligands. Using the similar approach, we report the stepwise formation of iridium and rhodium metallo-prisms bearing pentamethylcyclopentadienyl and bridging chloro ligands, connected by two 2,4,6-tripyridyl-1,3,5-triazine (tpt) subunits (Scheme 1).…”
