“…In general, the prevalence of B. japonicum superclade among the evaluated isolates is clear, as reported by other authors who studied the diversity of rhizobia associated with cowpeas (Sarr et al 2011;Chidebe et al 2018; Jaiswal and Dakor a 2019 ), and has be en obse rved i n other Bradyrhizobium diversity studies in the Brazilian semiarid region (Santos et al 2017) in agricultural managed soils.…”

“…Many studies have sought to determine the diversity of native nitrogen-fixing bacteria in Brazilian dry regions (Martins et al 2003;Leite et al 2009;Marinho et al 2017;Santos et al 2017;Rodrigues et al 2018), such as in the Lower Half São Francisco River Valley (Leite et al 2009;Nunes et al 2018). However, these studies did not consider the heterogeneity of the agricultural systems in the region.…”

“…Plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria, such as rhizobia, can stimulate root growth, which in addition to the Biological Nitrogen Fixation (BNF) by several other mechanisms. The growth promotion of peanut roots by ESA 123 was already observed (Santos et al, 2017), even under water stress (Barbosa et al, 2018), indicating a beneficial feature of this strain, in addition to BNF.…”

“…In addition to initiatives to generate new genotypes, research groups have focused on the selection of rhizobia adapted to soil and semiarid climatic conditions. These studies have led to the selection of efficient rhizobia strains both under greenhouse conditions as well as in the field (Sizenando et al, 2016;Santos et al, 2017). Rhizobia can improve legume tolerance to drought as already shown for peanuts (Furlan et al, 2012).…”

“…Despite being members of the Bradyrhizobium genus (according to IGS sequencing), based on the bacterial BOX-PCR profiles, the isolates from the large clusters with 100% similarity showed great intraspecific variability, with few clonal isolates among the bacteria within the culture collection. BOX-PCR is a fingerprinting technique with a high ability to discriminate among bacterial isolates within the same species or close species, including the Bradyrhizobium genus (Santos et al 2017;Chidebe et al 2018), and exploit the diversity of rhizobial culture collections. In addition to being very diverse, both bacteria from soils with and without biochar were symbiotically efficient compared with the reference strain B. yuanmingense BR 3267.…”
