Molecular and Hormonal Mechanisms Regulating Fleshy Fruit Ripening

Abstract: This article focuses on the molecular and hormonal mechanisms underlying the control of fleshy fruit ripening and quality. Recent research on tomato shows that ethylene, acting through transcription factors, is responsible for the initiation of tomato ripening. Several other hormones, including abscisic acid (ABA), jasmonic acid (JA) and brassinosteroids (BR), promote ripening by upregulating ethylene biosynthesis genes in different fruits. Changes to histone marks and DNA methylation are associated with the a… Show more

“…Plant hormones do not act in isolation in the process of plant growth, development, maturity, and senescence. On the contrary, they co-regulate a series of plant life activities in the complex network of phytohormones interaction (Fenn and Giovannoni, 2021;Li et al, 2021). Thus, to explore the crosstalk among endogenous plant hormones regulating fruit quality improvement seems to be meaningful.…”

“…Ethylene has long been implicated in ripening initiation, especially in climacteric fruits [ 5 ]. In order to address whether RA treatment affected ripening-induced ethylene biosynthesis, we quantified the ethylene production at different postharvest time points.…”

“…Ethylene plays a predominant role in fruit ripening, which initiates and promotes the ripening-associated physiological process [ 5 ]. Generally, two systems of ethylene production are associated with climacteric fruits.…”

“…Recently, some evidence emerged that ABI5 and ABFs/AREBs are also involved in fruit ripening and have an effect on fruit quality [91]. In Japanese plum (Prunus salicina), PsABI5 can directly activate the expression of ethylene biosynthesis gene, ACC SYN-THASE1 (PsACS1) and thus, it takes part in fruit maturation [92].…”
