Molecular and Epidemiologic Trends of Caliciviruses Associated with Outbreaks of Acute Gastroenteritis in the United States, 2000–2004

Abstract: Between July 2000 and June 2004, fecal specimens from 270 outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis were sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention by local or state health departments for calicivirus testing. Of the 226 outbreaks that met the criteria for inclusion in the present study, caliciviruses were detected in 184 (81%) by reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction and nucleotide sequencing. Nursing homes, retirement centers, and hospitals were the most frequently reported settings, and perso… Show more

“…This is the predominant genotype associated with NoV gastroenteritis worldwide, including Brazil (13,26). Two strains (5037 and 5118) were grouped with reference strains belonging to GII/6, GII/7 and GII/9, whereas strain 5032 formed an independent cluster (Figure 2).…”

“…MNV is related to human noroviruses (HuNoV), which cause most of the sporadic cases and outbreaks of infectious nonbacterial gastroenteritis worldwide in people of all ages (4,15,28,36,38,64). However, noroviruses are an understudied group of viruses due to the previous lack of a tissue culture system and small-animal model.…”

“…The outbreak strain was assigned, by sequence homology analysis, to the GII.4 variant 2010, considered the pandemic variant responsible of the epidemic events that occurred worldwide during 2009-2010 [Mathijs et al, 2011;Vega et al, 2011]. Over the last decade five NoV pandemic events have been reported associated with the genotype GII.4 and each of them have been trigged from a mutated strain [Blanton et al, 2006;Bull et al, 2006;Tu et al, 2008;Siebenga et al, 2009]. In the absence of a reliable cell culture system, the RT-PCR is considered the gold standard for NoV detection.…”
