Molecular and Cell Biology of a Family of Voltage-Dependent Anion Channel Porins in Lotus japonicus

Abstract: Voltage-dependent anion channels (VDACs) are generally considered as the main pathway for metabolite transport across the mitochondrial outer membrane. Recent proteomic studies on isolated symbiosome membranes from legume nodules indicated that VDACs might also be involved in transport of nutrients between plants and rhizobia. In an attempt to substantiate this, we carried out a detailed molecular and cellular characterization of VDACs in Lotus japonicus and soybean (Glycine max). Database searches revealed at… Show more

“…The first plant VDAC was identified electrophysiologically in purified outer membranes of pea mitochondria (Schmid et al, 1992). Since then, mitochondrial porins have been isolated and characterised from several plant species (Aljamal et al, 1993;Blumenthal et al, 1993;Abrecht et al, 2000a,b;Godbole et al, 2003;Wandrey et al, 2004).…”

“…Furthermore, no signal peptide and subcellular localization were predicted except that OsVDAC7 and OsVDAC8 encode a chloroplast transit peptide. In plants, VDACs are located not only in mitochondria but also in other cellular regions (Wandrey et al, 2004;Tateda et al, 2011). Although all 8 OsVDACs have typical transmembrane beta-strands based on the predictions of PRED-TMBB and BOCTOPUS (data not shown), further research on these VDAC genes is required to reveal their subcellular localizations and specific functions.…”

“…In plants, VDAC genes are expressed in an organ-specific manner and differential expression of VDAC genes during development has been reported (Al Bitar et al, 2002Bitar et al, , 2003Clausen et al, 2004;Wandrey et al, 2004). Moreover, the expression of VDAC genes can be affected by different stresses, including drought, heat shock, salinity, and defense against pathogens (Wang et al, 2006;Desai et al, 2006;Tateda et al, 2009Tateda et al, , 2011.…”

“…They are localized in outer membranes of mitochondria and in plastids in eukaryotes (Benz, 1994;Fischer et al, 1994). One important family of these proteins is the voltagedependent anion channel (VDAC) family in eukaryotes (Wandrey et al, 2004). In Arabidopsis five VDAC isoforms (Clausen et al, 2004) and in rice three isoforms were identified (Roosens et al, 2000).…”
