Molecular allergen profiling in horses by microarray reveals Fag e 2 from buckwheat as a frequent sensitizer

Abstract: BackgroundCompanion animals are also affected by IgE‐mediated allergies, but the eliciting molecules are largely unknown. We aimed at refining an allergen microarray to explore sensitization in horses and compare it to the human IgE reactivity profiles.MethodsCustom‐designed allergen microarray was produced on the basis of the ImmunoCAP ISAC technology containing 131 allergens. Sera from 51 horses derived from Europe or Japan were tested for specific IgE reactivity. The included horse patients were diagnosed f… Show more

“…Because this test can be performed using collected and stored blood samples, it may be a very valuable tool for diagnostics. In a previous study, we customised ImmunoCAP ® ISAC 112 for horses by adding 19 additional allergens and created ImmunoCAP ISAC 131 (Einhorn et al 2018). Using 'ImmunoCAP ® ISAC 131' we succeeded in detecting Fag e 2 as a causative allergen in 70% of investigated horses with allergic symptoms, likely sensitised by special 'protein-rich' horse diets, such as 'horse muesli' (Fig.…”

“…Common buckwheat is also added to animal feed for the purpose of nutrient addition (Keles et al 2018), and its husk is used as bedding material to add comfort to the animal breeding environment. However, recently, buckwheat allergy has also been reported in horses (Einhorn et al 2018).…”

“…While robust data regarding atopy exist in people, the situation in pet and farm animals has been investigated only recently. Dog breeds with a high prevalence of atopic skin disorders include the West Highland white terrier, Boxer, English bulldog, Dalmatian and French bulldog . In a Turkish human cohort, 33% of Hymenoptera reactive patients had atopic diseases, and in a Mexican study on beekeepers with atopic family history, it was 3.9% (CI 1.7‐9.2) .…”

“…RAO is a recurring pulmonary disease that typically affects middle-aged horses. It results in coughing and loss of performance (Einhorn et al, 2018). These clinical signs are largely triggered by bronchoconstriction and compromised gas exchange (Herszberg et al, 2006).…”
