Molecular Actors of Inflammation and Their Signaling Pathways: Mechanistic Insights from Zebrafish

Abstract: Inflammation is a hallmark of the physiological response to aggressions. It is orchestrated by a plethora of molecules that detect the danger, signal intracellularly, and activate immune mechanisms to fight the threat. Understanding these processes at a level that allows to modulate their fate in a pathological context strongly relies on in vivo studies, as these can capture the complexity of the whole process and integrate the intricate interplay between the cellular and molecular actors of inflammation. Over… Show more

“…In the present work, the effect of Asta-SD on DSS-induced UC in mice was explored first. DSS could directly damage intestinal epithelial cells and destroy the integrity of the mucosal barrier, resulting in the possibility of lumen bacteria entering the lamina propria and activating macrophages to secrete pro-inflammatory cytokines [ 31 ]. UC mice are induced by manifest with anorexia nervosa, weight loss, diarrhea, bloody stool, and colon shortening.…”

“…Inflammation is an adaptive biological response of the immune system to harmful stimuli, such as infections and tissue damage. 1 , 2 Acute inflammation serves as the initial self-defense response of the body to pathogen infections or injuries, during which immune cells and inflammatory factors collaborate to efficiently clear pathogens, repair tissues, and restore homeostasis. 3 , 4 If the inflammatory response is not promptly terminated, it may progress into chronic inflammation, aggravating tissue damage, and infectious diseases.…”

“…Hence, through genetic manipulation, chemical induction, and wound formation various model are developed in zebrafish to examine different aspects of the disease prognosis and the effects of therapeutics on suppressing the activated response [ 19 , 20 ]. Onset of diseases, dietary factors, genetic manipulations, therapeutic effects of anti-inflammatory drugs and mechanisms of drug delivery can be studied through these models [ 10 , 21 , 22 ]. Fig.…”
