Stripping in asphalt mixtures is the one of foremost distress mechanisms. To prevent stripping, fatty acids (AS) and hydrated lime (HL) additives are often used as anti-stripping additives. The determination of the correct usage ratios of these additives and the storage stability of bitumen constitutes important research topics for anti-stripping additive applications. Three surfactants and hydrated lime were used in three ratios to evaluate the effect of additive ratio and type. Indirect tensile strength (ITS) values obtained from samples with one and three cycle modified Lottman conditioning and indirect tensile strength ratios (ITSRs) were interpreted in the context of water damage. The load-carrying capacity of the conditioned mixtures increased significantly. Even if the degree of damage was considerably increased at the end of three cycles, the integrity of the mixtures was maintained. Both AS and HL significantly increased water damage resistance. Modified Lottman conditioning has an observable level of damage. Additives remained functional and maintain their mechanisms of benefit, especially in the event of a high degree of damage.

The impact of base and zycotherm binders modified with various proportions of nanosilica (i.e., 2 %, 4 %, and 6 %) based on the weight of the binder at high-temperature performance was investigated. Brookfield viscosity, penetration, softening point, and storage stability tests were all conducted on base and modified binders. Moreover, the Superpave rutting parameter (G*/sin δ) and Multiple stress creep recovery (MSCR) were utilized to assess the resistance of binders to rutting. By observing the outcomes of the modified binder tests, the incorporation of nanosilica into the base and zycotherm binders improved temperature susceptibility. Binders modified with nanosilica showed remarkable storage stability at elevated temperatures, as the variation in softening point between the upper and bottom parts was less than 2.5 °C for all binders. Based on the outcomes of the Superpave rutting parameter, the inclusion of nanosilica enhanced the stiffness of the modified binders up to 130 % for 6 % of nanosilica, while the improvement was caused by 6 % of nanosilica with zycotherm was nearly 92 % at 70 °C. The MSCR test revealed that the base and zycotherm binders' recovery (R%) was 27.72 % and 25.99 % for 6 % of nanosilica and 6 % nanosilica with zycotherm, respectively, while the nonrecoverable creep compliance (Jnr) decreased by 56.87 % for 6 % of nanosilica, and 43.23 % for 6 % nanosilica with zycotherm at 100 MPa. The results show that the incorporation of nanosilica is capable of improving the rutting potential regardless of the levels of stress. The rheological characteristics of modified base and zycotherm binders were improved at all concentrations of nanosilica, with the optimal concentration being 6% nanosilica.

High-viscosity modified asphalt (HVA) is widely used as the binder for permeable asphalt pavement, and hydrated lime (HL) attracts a strong technical interest as an effective moisture additive in asphalt for a long time. However, the application of HL in HVA has been rarely studied. The present study evaluates the influence of HL on the high-temperature rheological properties of HVA and selects the optimum HL content and fineness. The asphalt mortars of HVA and HL of different contents and fineness were prepared. Temperature scanning (DSR-TS), multiple stress creep recovery (MSCR) by using a dynamic shear rheometer, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) tests were carried out to evaluate the high-temperature rheological properties and microstructure morphology characteristics of the asphalt mortars. Based on the DSR-TS and MSCR tests, the results showed that high-temperature performance together with the ability to deformation resistance of HVA was improved apparently with the increase of the HL content. When the HL content is above 1.2, the stress sensitivity of HVA is lower. The SEM results clearly showed that the uniformity of asphalt mortars could be effectively guaranteed when the HL content was 1.2 and the fineness was 800 mesh. The HL fineness has little effect on the high-temperature performance of HVA. In summary, taking into account the high-temperature performance and microstructure of HVA with HL, the optimum HL content and fineness could be finally determined.
