The construction of suitable roads in rainy areas has created problems in the construction process due to the low resistance of asphalt to moisture. To solve this problem, materials are commonly used that make mixtures resistant to moisture; however, these materials may reduce the dynamic resistance of asphalt. Therefore, materials should be used that, in addition to increasing the dynamic resistance, also increase the moisture resistance of asphalt mixtures. One of these materials used in this research is steel wool fiber (SWF), which in addition to creating conductive roads also could have a significant effect on moisture resistance. In this study, the impact of 2%, 4%, 6%, 8%, and 10% SWF on the Marshall stability and moisture sensitivity of mixtures was investigated using the Marshall stability and indirect tensile strength (ITS) tests, respectively. Moreover, using SWF as a conductive fiber, the conductivity properties of asphalt mixtures were explored to find the optimal amount of electrical conductivity. The results of the Marshall stability test indicated that by increasing SWF contents, the stability of mixtures increased, compared with the base sample, and greater amounts of 6% SWF resulted in the reduction of the Marshall stability. The results of ITS showed that modification of bitumen by SWF increased ITS and tensile strength ratio (TSR) amounts of mixtures. 6% SWF was the optimal amount for enhancing the resistance of asphalt mixtures to moisture sensitivity. The results of the electrical resistivity test showed that the resistivity had three phases: high resistivity, transit, and low resistivity. Mixtures containing less than 4% SWF illustrated an insulating behavior, with electrical resistivity greater than 7.62 × 108 Ω . m . At the transit phase, the resistivity of mixtures had a sharp reduction from 7.62 × 108 Ω . m to 6.17 × 104 Ω . m . Finally, 8% SWF was known as the optimal content for the electrical conductivity of mixtures.

Asphalt mixture is the surface material of flexible pavement and semi-rigid pavement. It directly bears the influence of climate conditions and traffic load, and is prone to aging and fatigue damage. Therefore, using reinforcing agent to improve the performance of asphalt mixture is the long-term goal of researchers.This paper aims to study the effect of basalt fiber on asphalt viscosity and mechanical properties of asphalt mixture. Firstly, by testing the basic properties of asphalt binder with different fiber content, the viscosity characteristics of fiber + asphalt composites are analyzed by using the modified Einstein viscosity equation. The research shows that basalt fiber has obvious toughening effect on asphalt, and the penetration and softening point indexes are suitable to evaluate the viscosity properties of fiber + asphalt composites.Secondly, the effects of different fiber content on the water stability and splitting tensile strength of asphalt mixture are analyzed. The results show that the maximum content of basalt fiber should not be greater than 0.4%; With the increase of fiber content, the splitting strength of asphalt mixture increases, but the increase is not obvious when the content is > 0.30%, while the stiffness modulus continues to increase, indicating that the deformation resistance of asphalt mixture is enhanced after adding fiber. Based on the micromechanics theory of composite materials, the basic principle of basalt mineral fiber improving the strength performance of asphalt mixture is explained. The research shows that basalt mineral fiber can significantly improve the performance of asphalt mixture.

Aging in the field is significantly influenced by the initial voids in the asphalt mixture, the intensification of the asphalt mixture under traffic, and the amount of heat applied to the mixture during production. Hence, this research is used to evaluate the effect of long-term aging on the behavior of soft clay-modified asphalt mixture. This study aims to evaluate the usage of soft clay powder, as a newly introduced material in asphalt mixture. Indirect tensile strength, indirect resilient modulus, and dynamic creep tests were conducted to determine and evaluate the performance of samples mixed using the Superpave system. The results obtained were perceived to be successful. As for the indirect tensile strength, the addition of batu pahat soft clay contributes to increasing the indirect tensile strength, especially when it was observed by using 4%, which gave better results than other soft clay percentages. In the resilient modulus test, Batu Pahat soft clay particles improved the fatigue and rutting resistance by 10.04%. While; in the dynamic creep test, the 4% soft clay value gave the best performance of evaluation works when it was conducted in a long-term aging process with the value of 0.14mm. More importantly, the evaluation of aging conditions noted that soft clay could resist and delay aging, promoting pavement durability. Also, this study was conducted to determine the most suitable and optimum patu pahat soft clay particles in the asphalt mixture and expectant to produce a new road material and to contribute toward producing cheap and effective asphalt mixtures for road construction
