Moisture retention and antibacterial activity of modified chitosan by hydrogen peroxide

Abstract: A series of chitosans with various molecular weights from 1.2 ϫ 10 3 to 30.0 ϫ 10 4 were prepared by oxidative degradation with H 2 O 2 and characterized by IR, 13 C-NMR, and gel permeation chromatography. Their carboxylic contents increased with a decrease in molecular weight (M w ). The moisture-absorption and moisture-retention capacities of resulting chitosans were dependent on both the molecular weight and the degree of deacetylation (DD). Microcalorimetry was first used to study the kinetics of action of… Show more

“…However, when studying these nanocomposites, a possible decrease in the hydroxy radical concentration due to intense chitosan destruction by hydrogen peroxide via the radical mechanism was ignored. 8, 9 To exclude this effect, oligosaccharide of chitosan was used instead of the high molecular weight chitosan itself to stabilize the nanoparticles. Our preliminary experiments showed that the oligomer used underwent no changes under the experimental conditions.…”

“…As the M w was reduced the moisture- retention capacity first increased and then declined with a maximum moisture-retention capacity when the chitosan sample of 0.45 × 10 4 kDa was used. Moreover, the moisture retention and moisture-absorption increased with chitosan DD [ 84 ]. From all tested samples, the best sample was a chitosan of 0.45 × 10 4 kDa and a DA of 0.1…”
