Moisture dependent physical properties of lathyrus

Abstract: The moisture dependent physical properties of different lathyrus varieties namely NLK-40, Pratik and Ratan were studied at moisture content of 7.33 to 30.29, 6.75 to 29.95 and 7.90 to 30.90% (d.b.), respectively. The grain size, thousand grain weight, angle of repose, grain volume and surface area were found increased linearly. The grain size was found increased from 4.43 to 4.70, 4.96 to 5.32 and 5.08 to 5.49 mm. Thousand grain weight was found increased from 64.6 to 103.5, 69.1 to 105.3 and 85.3 to 125.6 g. … Show more

“…The decrease in q b of paprika indicates the increase in the volume of conditioned sample at a faster rate compared to increase in mass of sample due to the addition of moisture (Kenghe et al 2013). The change in bulk density was 12.20%.…”

“…Three major principle axes (length, width and thickness) of grain were measured with the help of Vernier caliper (Mitutoyo, Japan) having least count of 0.02 mm. The grain size (D m ) of the grain was calculated by using the relationship used by Kenghe et al (2013). The exact orientation of the grain in determination of different axis is as given in Figure 1.…”

“…True densities were determined with toluene displacement method (Kenghe et al, 2013). The porosity was calculated as the ratio of the difference in true density and bulk density to the true density values.…”

“…To design and optimization a machine for various post harvesting operation such as cleaning, transportation, packaging and sorting of crops, the physical attributes and their relationships must be known (Adebowale et al 2011;Ercisli et al 2012). The knowledge of properties can also be used to calculate surface area and volume which are important during modeling of drying, aeration, heating and cooling systems (Kenghe et al 2011). On the other hand, volume and its relationship with packing coefficient are very important because having any information about packing coefficient of fruits can led to efficient control of fruit quality (the price of agricultural produce is strongly depended on its availability and quality characteristics) during storing (Lorestani and Ghari 2012).…”
