The United States continues to be the largest corn producer in the world. How to maximize corn yield and at the same time reduce greenhouse gas emissions, is becoming a challenging effort for growers and researchers. As a result, our understanding of the responses of soil CO 2 and CH 4 fluxes to agricultural practices in cornfields is still limited. We conducted a 3-yr cornfield experiment to study the responses of soil CO 2 S. Dennis et al. 368tivity. Our results indicated that agricultural practices enhancing corn yield may also result in a net increase in carbon emissions from soil, hence reducing the potential of carbon sequestration in croplands.

CO 2 enrichment a b s t r a c t Sequestration of CO 2 via biological sinks is a matter of great scientific importance due to the potential lowering of atmospheric CO 2 . In this study, a custom built incubation chamber was used to cultivate a soil microbial community to instigate chemoautotrophy of a temperate soil. Real-time atmospheric CO 2 concentrations were monitored and estimations of total CO 2 uptake were made. After careful background flux corrections, 4.52 AE 0.05 g CO 2 kg À1 dry soil was sequestered from the chamber atmosphere over 40 h. Using isotopically labelled 13 CO 2 and GCMSeIRMS, labelled fatty acids were identified after only a short incubation, hence confirming CO 2 sequestration for soil. The results of this in vivo study provide the ground work for future studies intending to mimic the in situ environment by providing a reliable method for investigating CO 2 uptake by soil microorganisms.

The diurnal and seasonal variation of soil respiration (SR) and their driving environmental factors were studied in a maize ecosystem during the growing season 2005. The diurnal variation of SR showed asymmetric patterns, with the minimum occurring around early morning and the maximum around 13:00 h. SR fluctuated greatly during the growing season. The mean SR rate was 3.16 lmol CO 2 m -2 s -1 , with a maximum of 4.87 lmol CO 2 m -2 s -1 on July 28 and a minimum of 1.32 lmol CO 2 m -2 s -1 on May 4. During the diurnal variation of SR, there was a significant exponential relationship between SR and soil temperature (T) at 10 cm depth: SR ¼ ae bT . At a seasonal scale, the coefficient a and b fluctuated because the biomass (B) increased a, and the net primary productivity (NPP) of maize markedly increased b of the exponential equation. Based on this, we developed the equationto estimate the magnitude of SR and to simulate its temporal variation during the growth season of maize. Most of the temporal variability (93%) in SR could be explained by the variations in soil temperature, biomass and NPP of maize. This model clearly demonstrated that soil temperature, biomass and NPP of maize combined to drive the seasonal variation of SR during the growing season. However, only taking into account the influence of soil temperature on SR, an exponential equation over-or underestimated the magnitude of SR and resulted in an erroneous representation of the seasonal variation in SR. Our results highlighted the importance of biotic factors for the estimation of SR during the growing season. It is suggested that the models of SR on agricultural sites should not only take into account the influence of soil temperature, but also incorporate biotic factors as they affect SR during the growing season.
