“…This displacement yields more TCs affecting the Philippines in OND than JAS. Although the difference in TC numbers affecting the Philippines between OND and JAS is not statistically significant, the maximum TC season occurring in OND over the Philippines is a unique feature distinct from the maximum JAS season for other WNP areas (Chen et al, 2010; Lai et al, 2022; Tu et al, 2022). This interesting feature requires further investigation.…”

“…The MT migrates northward during summer and displaces southward during fall (Chen et al, 2017). TC activity is normally investigated for its salient feature in the peak JAS season (Lai et al, 2022(Lai et al, , 2023Shan & Yu, 2023) or its gross feature in the broader JJASO period (Chu et al, 2010;Tu et al, 2009). In the former approach, variability features of TC activity may be further compared between the peak JAS and post-peak October-December (OND) seasons (Feng et al, 2021;Shan & Yu, 2021).…”

“…The appearance of a westward‐extended anomalous cyclone over the WNP reflects a weakened and eastward‐shrunk WPSH. TCs thus tend to move northwestward/northward in the western WNP driven by southeasterly/southerly flows in the western sector of a weakened and eastward‐retreated WPSH (Lai et al, 2022; Zhao et al, 2011). Steering flow analyses in the previous section substantiate that this zonally elongated anomalous cyclone is responsible for steering TCs from the tropical eastern WNP northwestward to strengthen TC activity around Taiwan.…”

“…Most TCs in the WNP have their genesis assisted by the monsoon trough (MT) over a region 10°–20°N and later follow flows in the southern periphery of the western Pacific subtropical high (WPSH) to move westward, northwestward or northward (Chu et al, 2010; Kim et al, 2012; Tu & Chen, 2019). During July–September (JAS), TCs with a northwestward or recurving northward track normally approach or make landfall on Taiwan resulting in its peak TC season (Chen & Shih, 2012; Lai et al, 2022). Although TCs have a very high chance of causing significant losses in property and lives during their landfall, rainfall brought by TCs is a major water resource for Taiwan (Chen & Chen, 2011; Tsou et al, 2016).…”
