In the first relay of information processing, the olfactory bulb (OB), odors are known to generate specific spatial patterns of activity. Recently, in freely behaving rats, we demonstrated that learning modulated oscillatory activity in local field potential (LFP), in response to odors, in both ␤ (15-40 Hz) and ␥ (60 -90 Hz) bands. The present study further characterized this odor-induced oscillatory activity with emphasis on its spatiotemporal distribution over the olfactory bulb and on its relationship with improvement of behavioral performances along training. For that purpose, LFPs were simultaneously recorded from four locations in the OB in freely moving rats performing an olfactory discrimination task. Electrodes were chronically implanted near relay neurons in the mitral cell body layer. Time-frequency methods were used to extract signal characteristics (amplitude, frequency, and time course) in the two frequency bands. Before training, odor presentation produced, on each site, a power decrease in ␥ oscillations and a weak but significant increase in power of ␤ oscillations (ϳ25 Hz). When the training was achieved, these two phenomena were amplified. Interestingly, the ␤ oscillatory response showed several significant differences between the anterodorsal and posteroventral regions of the OB. In addition, clear-cut ␤ responses occurred in the signal as soon as animals began to master the task. As a whole, our results point to the possible functional importance of ␤ oscillatory activity in the mammalian OB, particularly in the context of olfactory learning.

Fast oscillations in the beta (15-40 Hz in awake rats) and gamma (50 -100 Hz) frequency ranges are prominent in field potentials induced by odorants in the mammalian olfactory bulb (OB) and piriform cortex (PC). Whereas the gamma oscillation has been studied for Ͼ50 yr, the beta oscillation has attracted attention only recently, and its origin, mechanism, and relationship to gamma are unknown. To address these questions, we have examined responses induced by odorants in the urethane-anesthetized rat-a preparation well-suited for the analysis of mechanisms. We found that both oscillations could be induced by odorants in a concentrationdependent manner. Analysis with a concentration series and spectral methods revealed that the beta and gamma oscillations were distinct and not harmonically related, indicating generation by independent mechanisms. The beta oscillation was synchronous at sites Յ4 mm apart in the OB, the greatest distance tested. In contrast, the gamma oscillation was synchronous in some experiments and asynchronous in others (frequency differed slightly at different sites, resulting in progressive phase shifts). Current source-density analysis indicated that, for both oscillations, the field potentials in the OB were generated by synaptic currents in granule cells. The two oscillations were differently affected by surgical interruption of the lateral olfactory tract. This lesion abolished the beta oscillation, whereas the gamma oscillation was still induced in the OB. Our results confirm previous reports that the gamma oscillation is generated within the OB but indicate that the beta oscillation requires the participation of PC.

The estrous cycle is a physiological process modulated by hormonal changes associated, in turn, with alterations of the attraction or sensitivity with which females perceive different sensory stimuli. Auditory stimuli play an important role in the social interaction of several mammals, including their sexual behavior and the mother-young relationship. Since the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and nucleus accumbens (Acc) had been associated with the processing and assignation of the incentive value of stimuli, this study was designed to analyze whether electroencephalographic (EEG) activity in the PFC and Acc was modified during the two antagonist phases of the estrous cycle (proestrus-estrus and diestrus) when female rats heard sound recordings with different types of cries emitted by other rats. EEGs were recorded in eight female virgin Wistar rats, 80 -100 days old, bilaterally implanted in the PFC and Acc during an awake-quiet state, in three conditions: when hearing 1) cries of pups; 2) cries of adult male rats; and, 3) cries of adult female rats. The cries were recorded from pups (2 -10 days old) and male and female adult rats after gentle prodding by a human hand. Each auditory stimulus (which included vocalizations up to 22 kHz) was randomly played back through a speaker placed near the female rats. Only upon perceiving the cries of male rats did the females in the proestrus-estrous phase show a lower relative power in the 14 -30 Hz band in the Acc and an increased inter-prefrontal correlation in the 8 -13 Hz band. It is probable that these EEG changes are associated with the lower activation or non-anxious state that the female rat presents specifically during the proestrus-estrous phase in response to the alarm cries of adult male rats.
