Modulation transfer function of charge-coupled devices

Abstract: A method for calculating the modulation transfer function (MTF) of charge-coupled devices (CCD) is presented. The analysis accommodates both the time- and space-variant properties of CCDs as well as input images moving with constant velocity within a scan interval. The model developed accounts for both the static and the dynamic MTF of CCD imaging systems.

“…Classically, images of sinusoidal gratings have been used for OTF lens measurements. When a focal plane array (FPA) images the grating the discretization means that the FPA must be moved relative to the image to give minimum and maximum MTF curves [17]. Sinusoidal laser interference patterns have been used by Marchywka and Socker [18], and laser speckle techniques can also be employed [19].…”

“…S. K. Park proposed to use average MTF to evaluate the imaging quality of discrete imaging systems based on point spread function Fourier transform [7]. J.Feltz used a line-array CCD signal in the sinusoidal input signal period to output the maximum value and the minimum value according to the contrast definition of MTF so as to offer the line-array CCD and expression of phaserelated MTF [8]. Song min experiments verified that the experiment results agree with Feltz's theoretical calculation [9].…”
