Modulation of penile erection in rabbits by mondia whitei: possible mechanism of action

Abstract: Mondia whitei root was evaluated to validate its anecdotal use and determine its possible mode of action in the management of erectile dysfunction. Rabbits were administered with daily oral doses of 100-400 mg kg -1 crude ethanolic extract of M. whitei and sildenafil (50 mg kg -1 ) as positive control for 6 weeks. Cavernosal tissue NOS activity and levels of NO and cGMP, and NOS and PDE protein expressions were investigated. The effect of the crude extract, chloroform and petroleum ether fractions in vitro on … Show more

“…This increased vasorelaxation resulted in an increase in the number of erections (NE) in the erectile bodies of the penis and, consequently, an increase in the erection index observed during our studies. Such a mechanism was also described by Quasie, Martey, Nyarko, Gbewonyoand, and Okine () in rabbits with M. whitei extract which stimulated NO synthetase activity.…”

“…A good example is the use of the aphrodisiac plant Mondia whiteii (Hook. f.) Skeels (Quasie et al, 2010). Despite not showing in vitro hypoglycemic effect (Etoundi et al, 2010), it is commonly included in multi-component preparations for diabetes management in men since erectile dysfunction is a common complication of the illness (personal communication during field work).…”

“…Prosexual effects were evident throughout the study, including after a single dose. Erectile effects of M. whitei on corpus cavernosal tissue have been demonstrated and attributed to an increase in NO (Quasie et al, 2010;Watcho et al, 2007b). Effects of M. whitei in increasing sperm motility and testosterone levels (Watcho et al, 2007a;Lampiao et al, 2008;Gundidza et al, 2009).…”
