Modulation of gingival cAMP levels by tissue infalmmation

Abstract: The basal levels of the nucletide cAMPin gingiva and the relationship of these levels to gingival tissue health was determined in Rhesus monkeys. It was shown that tissue cAMP levels were negatively correlated ot gingival infalmmation. Infalmed gingiva showed lower tissue cAMP levels that healthy gigiva. In adition, the effect of thetrauma of in the tissues progressively decreased as flaps were reflected for 30,60, or 120 minutes. It is concluded that inflammatory stimuli due to bacterial plaque or tissue trau… Show more

“…Chandler and Kramer (1977) studied the gingiva in Rhesus monkeys and found a mean value of 6.1 pmol cAMP/mg protein. In a more recent report Grower and Chandler (1979) claimed that the mean cAMP content was 23.75 pmol/mg protein in normal Rhesus gingiva, while the inflamed Rhesus gingiva contained 18.82 pmol cAMP/mg protein.…”

“…An interesting finding was the significantly lower exudate fiow found in smokers. Gingival inflammation is well known to be associated with elevated gingivai exudate levels, but also with low cAMP levels (Schaeffer 1977, Grower & Chandler 1979. The observation of high cAMP levels in heavy smokers together with a low exudate flow may point to smoking as a factor with the capacity to supress gingival inflammation.…”

“…Thus, we sought to understand the mechanisms of growth inhibitory effects of PGs in Gin-1. Grower & Chandler (9) and El Attar & Lin ( 10) reported that inflamed gingiva contained significantly higher levels of endogenous PGs and cyclic AMP ( 11) than healthy gingiva, and that endogenous PGs have been shown to stimulate endogenous cyclic AMP production in gingival tissue in vitro. They suggested that increased endogenous cyclic AMP levels found in the inflamed tissue may be attributable to the increase in endogenous PGs (11).…”
