Modular Graphical Ontology Engineering Evaluated

Abstract: Ontology engineering is traditionally a complex and timeconsuming process, requiring an intimate knowledge of description logic and predicting non-local effects of different ontological commitments. Pattern-based modular ontology engineering, coupled with a graphical modeling paradigm, can help make ontology engineering accessible to modellers with limited ontology expertise. We have developed CoMo-dIDE, the Comprehensive Modular Ontology IDE, to develop and explore such a modeling approach. In this paper we p… Show more

“…The construction of the model followed the eXtreme Design (XD) methodology (52,53), an agile methodology for KG construction based on the reuse of Ontology Design Patterns (38) (ODPs). ODPs provide solutions to recurrent modelling issues, guaranteeing a high level of ontology quality (54); previous work has demonstrated their positive impact on KG engineering and quality (55,56). The ontology definition is accompanied by the actual mapping of available data with the…”

“…The OWL files for the pattern, module, and ontology can be found online, as well as our supplementary data. 4 The OWL files were generated using the CoModIDE plugin [8] and annotated with OPLa [3,2] using the OPLa Annotator plugin [9]; both plugins are for Protégé 5…”

“…Algorithm is very domain dependent and we leave it to be specified in specific use-cases. Axiomatization This axiomatization was produced using the out-of-the-box axioms depicted in the Edge Inspector tool in CoModIDE [8], as well as the same axioms used during the systematic axiomatization process particular to Modular Ontology Engineering [11]. They are provided in description logic syntax below.…”
