Modular Design of an SMA Driven Continuum Robot

Abstract: Due to their unique manipulation capabilities, continuum robots find applications in a variety of different areas, such as medical technology or maintenance and repair. When working with continuum robots, it is often necessary to bend the structure according to complex shapes. This is commonly achieved by arranging several individual modules in series. In this paper, a novel continuum robot concept is presented based on a serial arrangement of SMA (Shape Memory Alloy) wires actuated modules. The key advantage … Show more

“…In order to realize the miniaturization configuration of continuum robots, many cutting-edge materials have been developed and used to realize the actuation of robots, showing unique advantages [38,[59][60][61]. The soft continuum robots embedded with micromagnet or made of ferromagnetic composite material have accurate steering ability under an external controllable magnetic field; its bending angle could exceed 180 degrees and has high positioning accuracy up to 10 μm [49].…”

“…In Yang and Asbeck (2020) and Chen et al (2020), vertically aligned robotic manipulators are presented using fluidic actuators. In Cheng et al (2019) and Goergen et al (2020), the vertically aligned robots use shape memory alloy (SMA) to actuate different parts of their bodies. Although these actuators demonstrate a high force to weight ratio, they lack the precision of other soft actuators, such as dielectric elastomer actuators (DEA) and tendons.…”
