Electric vehicles have been based on a new product architecture: modular electric vehicle platforms (MEVPs). Through a case study, this paper uses efficiency and sustainability criteria to analyse this modular architecture as implemented by three automobile manufacturers in their European production networks. The results show that MEVPs have been adopted to achieve the efficiency of mass-production electric vehicles in order to comply with regulatory environmental requirements. MEVPs are designed with structural compatible modules, an electric drive system architecture and modular batteries that can be adapted to each vehicle. These designs are focused on limiting energy consumption by reducing weight with the use of high-performance materials or extrathin batteries. Some of these MEVPs use fewer components in their design to facilitate disassembly and recycling. This new modular architecture has been implemented through compatible, flexible production systems accompanied by different sustainable production initiatives. The production system has incorporated carbon-neutral production processes or circular economy production models, which include remanufacturing and reuse. Networks resulting from these new MEVPs are geographically concentrated and are not conditioned by location factors. The roles of the plants have been mainly driven by economies of scale to achieve high-performance specialised products and high volumes. These plants play a role as hubs for electric vehicle production in the manufacturers' European production networks.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyse the key factors behind the adoption of new automobile modular platforms from the perspectives of product design, manufacturing network and production systems. Design/methodology/approach An in-depth and qualitative cross-case analysis of European manufacturing networks was performed based on the modular platforms of seven automobile manufacturers. Findings The adoption of modular platforms has changed automobile product architecture helping automobile manufacturers to improve their manufacturing network outputs. The results show that operational flexibility and scope and scale economies at manufacturing network level depend on the platform design – degree of modularity – and the manufacturer’s product and manufacturing network conditions. This new product architecture allows for the new production systems to be efficient in terms of flexibility and versatility without overinvestment. Originality/value The main contribution to the research literature is the combination of traditional product architecture with the manufacturing network approach to analyse the influence of product design on production systems, especially regarding the adoption of new automobile modular platforms.

Highly customized products have led to an irreproducible complexity in product development and order processing process. Today's product design and IT-tools reduce this complexity insufficiently and potentials in administration and manufacturing are not fully lapped. The approach presented in this paper starts the development of a product structure at the manufacturing environment. The aim is to develop a product structure for rotational products that is adapted for manufacturing processes and therefore enabling a costeffective production. As a result, companies are able to provide their customers with individual product solutions using standardized processes. This enables a technological and production-related flexibility to fulfill growing needs of global markets.
