Modified Water Displacement Method and its Use for Determination of Bulk Density of Porous Materials

Abstract: In this research work, a modified water displacement method (MWDM) was designed and used in addition to geometry method (GM) to measure the bulk volume and then determine the bulk density values of asbestos ceiling board, cardboard paper, chalk, clay (compacted) and gypsum board that have been sun-dried to constant weight. The mean bulk densities determined by both methods were compared with the reference bulk density values of the same porous materials obtained in this work using standard test procedure in … Show more

“…On both days, the SEUR's apparatus was used for the determination of the specific heat capacity of a test sample plate before the reference value for the same plate was determined by means of KD2-pro meter. Two techniques, namely geometry method and modified water displacement method, were employed to determine the volumes of the non-porous sample plates and porous sample plates, respectively, before their corresponding density was calculated [12]. Then after, the specific heat capacity value was computed thus…”

“…Underwater, the effective mass was equal to the actual mass minus the mass of the fluid displaced. According to Robert et al 25 and Casanova-Gonzalez et al, 26 the difference between the real and effective mass gives the mass of water displaced and allows the volume of the irregularly shaped object to be calculated. The average density of the sample can be calculated by dividing the mass by the volume that has been determined;…”
