Introduction: Currently many new treatment choices are present but removable complete denture is still treatment of choice. Retention, stability and support are the essential qualities of removable complete dentures and for these to achieve, borders of the prosthesis should be harmonized contact with surrounding tissues to produces a seal and that seal is known as peripheral seal.Objective: To determine the most posterior limit of the maxillary complete den-ture through position of vibrating line in relation with the fovea palatinae in com-plete denture patients visiting at Prosthodontics department of Isra dental college, Hyderabad.Methodology: During this cross-sectional study from June 2018 to March 2019, 155 edentulous patients of either gender, having age ranges from 40-60 years and above were included. Indelible pencil was used for marking of vibrating line location and results of vibrating line location whether it is anterior, at or posterior to fovea palatinae were recorded in written proforma when patient pronounce the word “Ah” in normal unexaggerated manner.Results: Among 155 edentulous patients, we found vibrating line anterior to fovea palatinae in almost 53% cases followed next in frequency it was found at the fovea palatinae in 46.5% cases.Conclusion: Fovea palatinae is best anatomical structures to help in location of vibrating line and posterior palatal seal and vibrating line in most cases is located anterior to the fovea palatinaeKeywords: Fovea palatinae, maxillary denture, posterior palatal seal area, reten-tion and vibrating line.

Objectives: Retention of maxillary denture is obtained by many factors includingphysical and physiological factors. Effective seal is obtained easily at buccal and labial bordersof maxillarsy. However, it is difficult to obtain peripheral seal at posterior border of upper dentureas there is no soft tissue draping. Fovea palatinae which has been considered as reliableanatomical guide in unmutilated mouth. Fovea palatinae are close to vibrating line and are insoft tissue making them useful as reference points for posterior limit of the denture. Our aim toidentify the relative position of vibrating line with reference to the fovea palatinae for determiningposterior border of the upper complete denture. Setting: Department of Prosthodontics,Lahore Medical and Dental College, Lahore. Method: 160 subjects were included in this study.The patients fulfilling the inclusion criteria, Fovea palatinae was located and marked with theindelible pencil in the soft palate. Subjects were instructed to rehearse the “ah” sound in normal,unexaggerated way. Location of the vibrating line was marked with same indelible pencil.The position of the vibrating line whether in front, at or behind the fovea palatinae was noted.Results: Our study results shows in 72(45%) subjects vibrating line lies in front, 81(50.6%)subjects it lies at and 7(4.4%) subjects lies behind the fovea palatinae. Conclusion: Seal mustbe situated just anterior to the vibrating line and distal to hard palate at compressible tissue ofsoft palate.

The present study aimed to establish and evaluate a method for recording edentulous jaw relations digitally without occlusal bases, using a handheld scanner and specially designed headgear. The headgear maintained the mandibular position. Ten edentulous patients’ upper (U) and lower edentulous jaw models (L) were prepared and scanned. A handheld scanner was used to capture the labial alveolar ridge mucosa relations in the upper and lower anterior arches directly (Dr). U and L were registered to Dr (test group). Complete dentures of patients in the intercuspal position were used to construct the relationship between U and L (control group). Differences in jaw relations in the test and control groups, in terms of vertical difference, displacement and rotation of the anterior and posterior, and displacement and rotation of the left and right were assessed using the Hotelling’s T2 test. The differences in the mean values and the mean of the absolute values of the jaw relations between groups were not statistically significant (P = 0.331) and significant (P = 0.016), respectively. Our findings show that it is possible to make digital recording of edentulous jaw relations by using a handheld scanner and headgear.
