Modified Record Base Featuring Postpalatal Seal Using Silicone Bite Registration Material

Abstract: This article describes a simple method of fabricating a stable and retentive record base to ensure an accurate registration of the maxillomandibular relationship. A postpalatal seal is established along the posterior end of the record base on the definitive cast using a silicone bite registration material to create a border seal along with the lip/cheek draping actions and to evaluate adequacy of the post dam.

“…For retention and stability purpose of removable complete prosthesis, borders of the prosthesis should be harmonized contact with surrounding tissues produces a seal and that seal is known as peripheral seal. [11][12][13][14][15] Peripheral seal creates between the flanges of the complete denture prosthesis and the underlying oral mucosa which inhibits deceiving of air & fluids underneath complete prosthesis. 16 Posteriorly in maxillary denture, it's very challenging to obtain this type of seal.…”

“…7 A harmonious contact of denture borders with surrounding tissues creates a seal known as peripheral seal. 9 Effective peripheral seal is obtained easily at facial borders of the maxillary dentures. 8 Seal at posterior border of maxillary denture is termed as posterior palatal seal.…”

“…8 Seal at posterior border of maxillary denture is termed as posterior palatal seal. 9 If posterior palatal seal is deficient either in length or depth than maxillary denture may suffer lack of retention. 8 Besides denture qualities, posterior palatal seal serves as barrier and prevents food accumulation beneath the denture.…”
