Diatomite filters were first used by the U.S. military during World War II. Following the war, water utilities first began using these filters for filtering potable water. In 1957, AWWA established Task Group 2710 P‐Diatomite Filtration, to determine more efficient design criteria for municipal use of diatomite filters. The objectives of the task group were to: define the areas of application of diatomite filters; define the essential characteristics of filters, filter aids, and filter installations; promote further research; and, provide a continuing record of accomplishments. This article provides the report of the AWWA Task Group 2710 P‐Diatomite Filtration.
