“…Heterologous arterial grafts have been used in several situations experimentally as well as clinically with different periods of follow-up and different results [1][2][3][4][13][14][15][16][17][18][19]. The main problem with these grafts was tissue degeneration after long-term implantation.…”

“…The main problem with these grafts was tissue degeneration after long-term implantation. The initial enthusiasm for bovine arterial grafts after short-term experimental and clinical observations by Rosenberg [5,6], Welch [7], Keshishian [14,16], Cutler [15], Slovin [17] and Dale [1,18], was tempered because of the high incidence of disruption, thrombosis, calcification and infection after long term implantation. They are only used in patients requiring A-V shunts in the extremities for hemodialysis and in situations where high flow circumstances exist such as in patients with portal hypertension [6].…”

“…The first serious but though failed attempt to develop IAr bioprosthesis were the researches carried out in 50-60ies of the last century [8][9][10]. The authors used bovine carotid artery treated with proteolytic enzymeficin -with the following preservation in formaldehyde.…”
