Objective: The No-React process for biomaterials was suggested to prevent calcification and degeneration. We examined in vivo in a chronic sheep model the performance of a Biocor bovine internal mammary artery (BIMA) graft after No-React processing. Methods: ‘No-React’ processing consists of aldehyde cross-linkage following a detoxification process with multiple physical variables and incubation with surfactant. Biocor BIMA No-React treated grafts have been interposed in the carotid artery in seven sheep with a Dacron graft as control. Grafts were explanted after 3 or 6 months and were grossly examined, by X-ray, histology, transmission and scanning electron microscopy, and atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Results: In the BIMA, good healing was found with a smooth intimal surface, minimal inflammatory reaction, and a well preserved ultrastructure. Calcification increased progressively. In the Dacron grafts, a fibrous covering the inner surface and infiltration with fibroblasts, histiocytes and macrophages was noted. Calcium content was stable. Conclusion: Calcification increased progressively in Biocor BIMA No-React grafts. Minimal inflammatory changes, a smooth inner surface and well preserved ultrastructure were noted.

Currently, the gold standard of plastic material for infrainguinal artery replacement is still autovein, however, not infrequently the necessity for prostheses arises.The review presents the characteristics of xeno-and allogenic prostheses for lower limb arteries, which have been used in vascular surgery worldwide since 1960-ies till the present.There have been analyzed the clinical results with the bioprostheses, their advantages and disadvantages being discussed. We have shown that the approach based on chemically cross-linked human and animal tissues used for bioprostheses is limited in its further development.We have studied the evolution of tissue engineering vascular grafts (TEVG), and carried out a critical review of current state of the issue, and presented further paths of its development.

RESUMO : Foram interpostos 20 segmentos de artéria caudal bovina (ACB), tratados com glutaraldeído e formal dei do, nas artérias femorais de 10 cães. O período de seguimento pós-operatório variou de 180 a 297 dias. Foram avaliados: função motora, pulsos (à palpação e ao ultra-sônar), variações das pressões arteriais sistólica, diastólica e média e fluxo através do enxerto, assim como consistência dilatação e coloração quando da retirada. Não houve óbitos, alterações da marcha ou processos inflamatórios nas feridas . Houve trombose total (15%), trombose mural focal (30%) , reação linfoplasmocitária focal da adventícia (100%), calcificação unicamente das miocélulas (5%), reendotelização total (60%) e parcial (30%). Por apresentar adequação com diâmetro de pequenas artérias, ter comprimento suficiente para substituir ou atingir diversos segmentos de artérias distais, apresentar rápida endotelização, bem como ausência de rejeição, é demonstrada a receptividade ao uso da ACB como enxerto vascular alternativo. INTRODUÇÃOUma das controvérsias em operações de pequenas artérias e revascularização do miocardio é a escolha de um enxerto substituto, quando os enxertos autológos não estão disponíveis.A veia safena magna figura entre os enxertos autólogos mais utilizados, com seguimento evolutivo acima de quinze anos (1-3) , embora o desenvolvimento da doença arterioesclerótica e a aceleração da hiperplasia intimai constituam problemas freqüen-tes (3-6).A artéria torácica interna tornou-se o enxerto ideal nas operações de revascularização do miocárdio, mas, pela sua localização, tem pouca aplicabilidade e disponibilidade outras, se não nestes procedimentos (7-9).As artérias gastroepiplóica direita, radial, epigástrica inferior e esplênica vêm sendo utilizadas como enxertos alternativos; entretanto, seu seguimento clínico, por ser recente, ainda merece melhor avaliação (10)(11)(12)(13)(14).
