Modified boron nitride‐basalt fiber/epoxy resin composite laminates and their enhanced mechanical properties

Abstract: At present, the application of epoxy resin and its composites was severely restricted by its disadvantages of intrinsic brittleness after curing, poor fatigue strength, and low fracture energy. In order to improve its mechanical performances and broaden its applied range, the modified boron nitride‐basalt fiber/epoxy resin composite laminates (EP‐BF/mBN) were successfully prepared via a hot‐press process by using BF as reinforcement of epoxy resin composites and BN nanosheets treated by codeposition of PDA and… Show more

“…Flexural loading contains multi-type loadings including tensile, shearing, and/or compressing loadings, so flexural property is often used to characterize the mechanical properties of thermosetting resins along with impact strength. [32][33][34] It is worth noting that the impact strengths of BP resin are not only higher than that of BD resin, but also comparable to the highest impact strength of halogen-free and phosphorus-free flame retardant bismaleimide resins (13-19 kJ/m 2 ) in SCI database. 11 The good toughness of BP resins can be also confirmed by the morphologies of the fracture surfaces of cured resins.…”

“…Mechanical properties of resins contain impact, flexural and tensile properties. Flexural loading contains multi‐type loadings including tensile, shearing, and/or compressing loadings, so flexural property is often used to characterize the mechanical properties of thermosetting resins along with impact strength 32–34 . Figure 6 exhibits mechanical properties of cured resins, and the obtained impact strengths, flexural moduli and flexural strengths of BD and BP resins are listed in Table S2.…”

“…% of WMP reached 7.5, which was 78.7 MPa. The reason for the enhancement is majorly attributed to two factors viz: the reinforcement of strong basalt fibre and the addition of marble powder [ 35 , 36 , 37 , 38 ]. The intermetallic bonding with epoxy of basalt fibre provided strength to the composite whereas the WMP acted as a bridging agent between the basalt and WMP.…”

“…In such cases, various fillers are added to compensate the later [ 34 ]. Numerous types of fillers, such as silicon carbide, dolomite powder, boron nitride, marble dust powder, etc., are added to toughen the polymers, thus, recognized as a crucial aspect in the strengthening, usually at low cost [ 6 , 35 ]. Although innumerable fillers are qualified to be selected as a filler, marble dust powder distinguishes itself due to availability, low-cost, and recyclability.…”

“…ASTM G-99 standard was adhered in assessing the wear characteristics of AAFHF/SiC/UPR hybrid composite specimens using Pin-on-disk arrangement. 30 A load cell gave the frictional force values with the assistance of a digital indicator. Prior to experimentation the composite specimens and the counter body was cleaned using SiC abrasive sheet to provide intimate interaction between them.…”
