Modification of unsaturated polyester resin with bismaleimide

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The modification of a commercially available unsaturated polyester resin with 4,4Ј-bismaleimidodiphenylmethane is presented. The properties of the modified resins were compared with those of the nonmodified resin, and the resins were characterized in the noncured state and after curing. The results indicate that the addition of bismaleimide to unsaturated polyester resin not only improves its properties but also accelerates the curing reactions.

“…triallyl isocyanurate, have been applied jointly with styrene in order to increase the glass transition temperature of crosslinked UPRs. Recently, bismaleimide (Scheme 12) joined the monomers being used in UPRs exhibiting enhanced heat resistance [26,27]. The presence of bismaleimide results in an increase in crosslinking density and in the overall rigidity of the network.…”

“…An important feature which is desirable in a number of applications in which UPRs are used is thermal stability, for example in electrical applications such as voltage transformers and current transformers. There have been efforts to increase the thermal stability of the UPRs by the addition of bismaleimides (BMIs) [11, 12]. BMIs, when incorporated in polymers, are known for their ability to increase thermal performance [13, 14].…”

“…Bismaleimide resins are also widely used in applications where high thermal stability and performance is a requirement and have been known to result in polymers with a thermal stability up to 300–350°C coupled with high fatigue resistance even at high humidity [15–17]. A number of studies have been reported in which BMIs have been incorporated in UPRs, however, in all previous cases the curing of the compositions have been carried out at elevated temperatures [11, 12]. Literature reports have shown that the addition of BMI in UPR composites resulted in an increase in both the Tg and thermal stability of the resultant composites [11].…”

“…Thus, improving toughness of the UPRs has been the key of considerable research. The main methods of toughness modifi cation for UPR include adding rubber elastomer [1,2] , nanometer-sized fillers [3] , thermoplastic additives [4] , changing chemical structure [5,6] and forming interpenetrating polymer networks(IPN) [7,8] etc. Specifically, the forming IPN structures between UP and PU are considered to be an effect way to modifi ed UP resins.…”
