Solar energy-gas-fired boiler heating systems attract widespread attention due to their eco-friendly technologies and reasonable prices. In order to promote the application of a solar energy-gas-fired boiler system for decentralized heating, this study proposed a holistic method to optimize the combination of equipment specifications and control strategies of the system. A detailed mathematical model of the hybrid energy system was developed and validated by experiments to simulate various operating conditions and evaluate the optimal design results. A case study was conducted in Tianjin, China, and optimal schemes were obtained. The influence of different factors on the system’s annual comprehensive energy efficiency ratio (AEER) and annual cost (AC) were studied by sensitivity analysis; the results showed that the solar collector area was extremely valuable for the optimization of AEER and AC. The results of this study provide a reference for the optimization design of the solar energy-gas-fired boiler system, which is beneficial to the promotion of the utilization of solar energy.

Background Solar water heating is a highly sustainable method of extracting thermal energy from the sun for domestic and industrial use. In residential buildings, thermal energy from a Solar Water Heater (SWH) can be used to heat spaces, shower, clean, or cook, either alone or in combination with conventional heating systems such as electricity- and fossil-fuel-based heaters. In the industrial sector, SWHs can be used in various high-temperature fluid processes, including chemical processing, manufacturing, power generation, and construction. Despite the technological advancements in water heating systems, there are still some significant technical and economic challenges that limit their widespread adoption and commercialization. Despite their potential to revolutionize the industry, these systems remain in the shadows of unsustainable water heating solutions. Main body of the abstract This paper reviews recent selected publications on the technical and techno-economic aspects of solar water heating technology. The discussions include the effects of some parameters and components on the overall thermal efficiency of the SWHs as well as the techno-economic prospects of the technology. In addition, the paper provides the existing research gaps and recommendations for future research directions. Short conclusion The present review paper is unique because it condenses the recent studies carried out on both the technical and techno-economic aspects of the SWHs. It provides a comprehensive framework for interested readers and researchers to gain insights into the technical and economic status of SWHs. However, it is not an exhaustive study. The information presented can aid researchers in conducting further research on the subject, as well as understanding the future of SWHs.

Flat plate solar collector has been presented as an example of a heat-exchanger with two input signals, solar radiation intensity and temperature of working medium on the input, and one output signal, the temperature of a working medium on the output. The dynamics of heat exchange were analyzed for two models of a solar collector—an analog one using a thermoelectric analogy, and a digital one—determined experimentally in on-line mode using the parametric identification method. The characteristics of both models were compared in terms of their step and frequency response for selected construction and operational parameters. Tests of step responses determined for the analog model indicate that the dynamics of heat exchange in the solar collector depending on two input signals is varied. For step-forcing of input signals of the analog model, in both cases, a stable steady state is achieved, but while the first of the signals is inertial, the second one is oscillatory. The phenomenon of temperature oscillation at the collector outlet suggests the need to introduce a new physical quantity in the thermoelectric analogy-thermal inductance. Such an assessment of the dynamics of the solar collector can be useful for proper designing (construction parameters simulation) and diagnostics (operational parameters simulation) of the device.
