Modification of the Optical Properties of CaF2TR3+ Crystals by Yttrium Impurities

Abstract: Absorption and luminescence spectra of CaF2Nd3+ (type 1) [1] crystals are investigated as a function of the concentration of added yttrium fluoride. The appearance of new lines, and a decrease in the line intensities, due to yttrium content is attributed to a shift in the equilibrium of Nd centres. Some possible models are discussed. The equilibrium of centres of rareearth ions (TR3+) in the presence of yttrium fluoride in CaF2Nd3+ crystals is calculated approximately.

“…In [14], the parameter 5.46295 (10) Å from [20] was used to calculate the dependence. The concentration dependence of the lattice parameter has the form: a(x) = a o + kx, where a o = 5.46385 (5), k = 0.1999(4). The refinement by the least-squares method was performed with the fixed intercept value a o .…”

“…The Ca1-xYxF2+x crystals as active media for lasers were first proposed [5] in 1965, and today, interest in them still remains [6]. The spectroscopic properties of Nd 3+ [7,8], Tm 3+ [9] and Yb 3+ [10] doped Ca1-xYxF2+x solid solution crystals were studied.…”

“…The Nd 3+ doped CaF 2 crystal as a laser-pumped-amplifier medium has been abandoned due to a very serious concentration quenching effect which results from the clustering of the neodymium ions and kinds of cross-relaxation type energy transfer processes, which weaken their emission quantum efficiency [2]. ions [3][4][5][6][7][8], La 3+ ions [9], and Sc 3+ ions [10]. For example, Nd,Y:CaF 2 crystal, Y 3+ ions were codoped in Nd:CaF 2 crystal which substitute for Ca 2+ forming complicated local structure that performs an effect on spectroscopic properties [8].…”

“…Recently, however, interest in these systems has been renewed. The incorporation of Y 3þ , La 3þ , and Sc 3þ ions resulted in the dissociation of the Nd 3þ -Nd 3þ quenching pairs in clusters, thereby critically reducing the luminescence quenching in neodymium-doped alkaline earth fluorides [4][5][6][7][8] . Nd; Y:SrF 2 crystals have achieved some interesting laser performances [9][10][11] .…”
