Modification of PLA-Based Films by Grafting or Coating

Abstract: Recently, the demand for the use of natural polymers in the cosmetic, biomedical, and sanitary sectors has been increasing. In order to meet specific functional properties of the products, usually, the incorporation of the active component is required. One of the main problems is enabling compatibility between hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces. Therefore, surface modification is necessary. Poly(lactide) (PLA) is a natural polymer that has attracted a lot ofattention in recent years. It is bio-based, can be … Show more

“…These new and smart beauty masks, processed and distributed in the dry state, and activated by water, only when used, may be considered innovative and safe because they are free of preservatives, emulsifiers, colors, fragrances and other chemicals [22,49,50,[71][72][73]86]. The active ingredients, in fact, are directly linked to the tissue's fibers, during the producing process [49,50,57,[87][88][89]91].…”

“…Hence the coating of PLA non-woven and their substrates with functional compounds incorporating antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and skin regenerative properties, seems to be a relevant process, yet studied by several authors. Miletić et al [72] developed active coatings with modified and unmodified chitin-lignin nanoparticle complexes to apply them on extruded PLA-based sheets.…”

“…Moreover, chitin nanofibrils-nanolignin complexes (CN-LG) can be prepared by gelation method, incorporating selected molecules [4]. Examples are complexes incorporating glycyrrhetic acid (GA) [24] or niacinamide [25], that can be selected for their antiinflammatory properties.…”

“…Many researchers have recently devoted attention to the surface modification of PLA in order to improve PLA performance and expand its applications [ 4 , 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 ]. Aulin [ 29 ] built up a transparent nano-cellulose multilayer film on PLA with adjustable gas barrier properties using the layer-by-layer deposition method.…”
