Modification of Morphology and Glycan Pattern of the Oviductal Epithelium of Baboon Papio hamadryas during the Menstrual Cycle

Abstract: The mammalian oviduct is a highly specialized structure where fertilization and early embryonic development occur. Its mucosal epithelium is involved in maintaining and modulating a dynamic intraluminal fluid. The oviductal epithelium consists of ciliated and non-ciliated (secretory) cells whose differentiation and activity are sex hormone-dependent. In this study, we investigated for the first time both the morphology and the glycan composition of baboon oviductal epithelium during the menstrual cycle. Oviduc… Show more

“…As it has been previously reported (Desantis et al 2022 ), the epithelium lining the mucosal folds consisted of cuboidal and undifferentiated cells during the follicular and luteal phases (Fig. 2 b,d) and well-differentiated columnar ciliated and non-ciliated cells during the preovulatory phase (Fig.…”

“…The baboon reproductive cycle’s phase was identified as previously described (Desantis et al 2022 ). Briefly, serum samples obtained by blood centrifugation were used to evaluate beta-estradiol and progesterone concentrations by commercial ELISA kits (monkey ELISA kits, My BioSource; San Diego, CA USA).…”

“…Superovulation may decrease the number of fertilized oocytes and preimplantation competence in vivo. The lower fertilization rate of oocytes obtained in vivo using superovulation methods may be attributed to sperm or oocyte transportation disturbances in the oviduct (109), alteration in the oviductal function such as the presence of carbohydrate residues on the epithelium of the ampulla (110), and the expression of specific genes (111). The variation in the timing of oocyte maturation between follicles during ovulation could also potentially lead to a reduced fertilization rate (112).…”
